What's good about DFW radio?
« on: October 21, 2005, 03:39:42 PM »

Seems like most postings here are on the critical side.  I'd like to know what you LIKE about DFW radio today.  Shows, hosts, stations that are doing it RIGHT.

I'll start with a vote for KERA's Glenn Mitchell.  He's smart, human, and witty.
Glenn doesn't talk down to his audience, doesn't insult his callers, and is not above the occasional self-depricating remark. His Friday "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know" shows are a delightful infoblitz.

For the most part, the audio quality across both bands is
pretty good (excluding the IBOC hash for we analog listeners).
The majority of the stations are well-modulated so there's
not a big disparity when tuning from one to the other.

In terms of content, I think that KTCK sets a standard for
other markets to emulate. Between The Ticket, WBAP, KSKY,
KXEB (Air America), KFXR (1190) and KLIF -- my personal
listening needs are met to the extent that I really don't
bother much with FM (except for an occasional KESS listen).

I'll vote for KLLI's Russ Martin.  He's smart, human and witty.
Russ DOES talk down to his audience, DOES insult callers and is impervious to all that surrounds him.  His shows are a delightful train wreck and he has a lot more money than Glenn Mitchell.

I like the number of stations you can hear U2 on.

No, but seriously, the FM music market is pretty good here.

And, it's great to have so many news stations on the AM dial.  Something happens, its covered.

WRR-anytime. KNON's Blues shows. Ed Wallace on KLIF, Charley Jones and Ernie Brown on 1080, Jody Dean on KLUV, KTCU sometimes, and KNTU-the one for jazz.
Most of all I like my co-workers at the station I work for. They're the best in the business.

WBAP  for traffic and news
WRR is decent
KEOM is better
Jody is a good fit on KLUV
KMNY is catching on with informational Financial programing
KERA is very good with Glenn and Morning edition
All the others just blow.

Most bang for the buck is definitely KEOM.  I even get their signal out where I live in the north 40.  Haven't seen Robert Bass around here lately.

The rest of the FM dial I just flip through.  If I were fillin out a diary a buttload of stations would get a quarter hour from me.

All the AM talk stations suck.  The 3 big names - Ankarlo, Knapp, and Davis are all windbag hacks.  If it's on AM, it's on The Ticket.

What's good about DFW Radio?

IMHO....Radio markets go in cycles. While most may be suffering because of Voictracking, budget cuts, etc there is still some good radio.

The Wolf while they may be down is a Superb station Excellent talent, Great audio, I think KSCS beat them this time because of better contesting.

KLUV is sounding better than ever. While it may not be perfect the audio has improved alot. Music is on target. Not too tight/not to loose.

KLTY is a great sounding Christian station. One of the best i've heard. I'd put it up against any secular AC station.

KLIF i think is a very well produced station. I really enjoy listening to Darrel Ankarlo. He really relates to the market. Some of the promos on KLIF are just incredible. Excellent processing!

That's about all i listen to in my little radio world. While there may be some duds, there is plenty of good radio out there.

Good night and Good luck.

KEOM gets my first mention -- for playing music that in some cases can probably not be heard anywhere else in the country.  And for still providing a place where high school students can go on the air and learn how to do radio.

KXEB is worth a mention simply for the fact that the Air America programming presents a viewpoint that isn't otherwise heard in commercial talk radio.

And, for all its shortcomings, KJKK (Jack) deserves credit for occasionally playing a song that I'm surprised to hear on the radio.  Prior to Jack, the last time a commercial radio station managed to do this for me was over ten years ago.

Yeah, I like Glenn -- bright, intelligent, well read, etc.

People with a brain listen to Glenn -- the rest to Rush.

What's with the KERA's PD though?

Most of NPR is good to excellent.  Sure it's biased.

So is Salem.

So what?

USA Radio Network's news is so slanted you cannot separate the news from the commentary.

Someone ought to tell USA that Roe v. Wade was decided years ago when the editor selects a lead story.

"The Mighty 1190" -- wider playlist than "Jack" ever thought about ... without many or any commercials ... or smarmy, wise-guy imaging.

I liked Tejano ... but it is as dead as beautiful music and many of the listeners that enjoyed it.

Same for the standards on KAAM.

92.1 KXEZ -- if you're in the north Dallas suburbs -- Plano, Allen, McKinney, Frisco, etc. or if you live in Garland, Rockwall, Sachse, Wylie, etc.

Better oldies -- wider variety, more uptempo, much fewer commercials during morning and afternoon drive than KLUV.  And cleaner, better audio.

Oh, KLUV doesn't play "oldies" anymore.  Sorry, my mistake :-).

WRR to relax -- especially in the car at the end of the day.

And someday, people will appreciate WRR -- when it is gone.
