MEDIA BLITZ
By John Molori

Sources: Mike Adams to get evening slot at WEEI

Two WEEI sources have told Media Blitz that veteran sportscaster Mike Adams will be named full-time evening host at the station.  Adams will succeed Ted Sarandis in the 7:00 p.m.-Midnight time slot.

One source, an on-air person at WEEI, says, “Mike Adams is getting the night gig. WEEI will be announcing very soon. (WEEI general manager) Julie Kahn will give him a chance to star, with strings attached, meaning he will be on a short leash when it comes to punctuality, etc. If he passes, the job is his.”

The second source, a WEEI staffer, added, “It’s a done deal.  Adams is going to get the gig sooner than later.  The job is his, but he has to show up on time.  If things go well, he’s their guy.”

Adams, perhaps undeservedly, had been accused of being tardy for shows at AM 1510 The Zone in a previous morning show stint.  Recently, however, he has been a model employee at WEEI often working the late night shift, then returning for the “Dennis and Callahan” morning show as a flash reporter or cohost.  Adams is married, with a child on the way in April.

In a phone conversation, Adams told Media Blitz, “I had a meeting with (WEEI programming chief) Jason Wolfe about the job, but he said it was to be continued, and it hasn’t been continued.”  Earlier this month, Adams told Media Blitz, “I would definitely be interested in the full-time job and I have been interested in it for years.”

Adams hosted an ill-fated morning show at AM 1510, cancelled in February of 2003 after just three and a half months on the air.  He is best known as the maniacally talented and original host of NECN’s “Sportsworld.”  Calls to WEEI general manager Julie Kahn regarding the Adams hiring have yet to be answered.

if it's true, good choice... I could also stand to have Wallach on there too... just glad Teddy is gone, especially with all the "five action packed hour" broadcasts during the Red Sox off season.

Mike is my first choice. At least he has a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously. Teddy was getting a little too intense and up tight with the callers. Knowing WEEI, they're probably milking this a bit to keep people guessing. Also makes for good talk on the other shows. Remember how long it took them to announce Neumy's replacement even though they had Holly penciled in almost from the beginning.

EEI will continue to "audition" a week at a time until they find their guy.  Mike Adams is not in the lead, any more than Wallach.  It's open at this point.  Another consideration; Wallach is a great fill-in host and a fantastic flash guy... he has been vocal about his desire for the night shift.  Do you pass him up, and risk him being upset and souring that relationship?

From the posts, it appears either Media Blitz jumped the gun big time, or got very errouneous info.  I do like Mike, I also like Wallach...And since I started listening to 'EEI, I've wondered why "The hardest working flash guy" never had his own show, with the exception of the now defunct Wallach and Dickerson on the weekend.  He (Wallach) knows his stuff, as does Mike, has a good radio voice, and is good to listen to, but one thing that he tends to overdo, and I don't know if maybe this is one of the reasons he hasn't gotten his own show?  who knows....but what I've notices is, he always gives his co-host "sh*t", if ya know what I mean...always jokingly poking fun at them, but it just seems different then when other hosts are doing it.

Hey....what if it became "Sports Night With Wallach and Adams" ...There ya go!

Yeah, I remember one instance that made me want to jump through the radio at Ted.  It was early on in the season no one knew what would be happening with Schilling.  A caller was starting to pose a question, and he said "When Schilling comes back......."  The caller didn't even get to finish the question, because Ted jumped in, "Wait, who are you?  Are you a doctor?  What makes you think he's coming back, it's not a definite"  "What kind of medical expertise do you have to say 'when he comes back'?"  "You don't know he's coming back and it's wrong for you to say so!"

The poor guy was just gonna ask a question and Ted (to quote Day-ul) got his "boxes in a bunch"

Listener: "Teddy, I was driving in my car and...well, I went to school in Michigan where Tom Brady played and..."

Ted Nation: "What, you aren't a BC College sports fan?  This city has to get its priorities straight!  And before you try and get a word in edge-wise, let me declare that you are just another member of the Fellowship of the Miserable and I just don't have time to talk with you!"

Boy, who could possibly compete with entertaining radio like that?

Don't forget the intro he always played in which a caller said he was a Michigan alum, and Teddy started whistling the fight song, and then said "I used to have it until we moved and the producer lost it"
