More Columbus Micro Broadcasters
« on: June 07, 2005, 11:01:10 AM »

In addition to the previously mentioned 100.5 / 91.5 station, I have discovered two more micro-broadcasters transmitting regularly in the area. They are both on 91.5 and one can be heard every afternoon in the vicinity of Rt-33 and Avery Rd. He is rebroadcasting WSM satellite radio. The other one claims to be broadcasting from the Karl Rd. Baptist Church and says it has a range of one mile (not exactly FCC Part 15). Its sort of interesting to see the sudden surge of micro broadcasting here in the local area. Maybe the people are finally getting so fed up with Clear Channel et al that they have decided to do their own thing and broadcast whatever they want.

Or maybe the guy rebroadcasting Sirius' feed of WSM/Nashville is just listening to his favorite country tunes, and you're hearing it via an FM modulator. Wink

A reasonable theory, especially since 88.1 ( the default frequency) would not be a good choice in Columbus.  91.5 just seems to be the first clear spot on the  dial and whoever is selling them tunes them all up to there.

Micro Broadcaster on 91.5 Dublin area?
« Reply #3 on: June 07, 2005, 09:33:50 PM »

Heard a Pirate? on 91.5 tonight driving on 270 from Tuttle to near 315 the signal went from bairly there, to very clear (near sawmill road/256 area then got weaker as I headed towards 315)  Was uncensored Comedy... Heard many F-Bomb's being dropped..  Doubt an Itunes transmitter could provide that long of a distance of a signal.

I've not picked the Dublin 91.5 but the 100.5 pirate was alive and kicking again during Tuesday's drive time playing a Ted-FM-like mix of songs.
I'll monitor for the Dublin station and see what I come up with.
As far as iPod transmitters, I've picked up my neighbor's iPod (incorrectly interpreted as a pirate a few months ago) with my high-gain outdoor beam antenna but that still is only 1/2 a block away.  This signal is pretty weak too.  Those milliwatt transmitters don't get out far from the walls of your house.

I am willing to beleive that these folks on 91.5 and 100.5 that are not licensed, are using more than a little ipod or "play your mp3 player thru your car radio milliwatt transmitter.

They are unlicensed.  I agree on the power levels you maintain too.
The 91.5 and 100.5 previously mentioned on this board are pushing power out in watts not milliwatts.  It appears that the 100.5 is a stronger signal though.
Both signals are vertically polarized and have a transmitting area of square miles not square yards (like a milliwatt transmitter would).  They can be received in the campus area all the way out to Avery Road on RT 33.  In fact, when traveling along 315, the signal from the 100.5 pirate is so strong that it wipes out WCLT on the lower adjacent channel on my stock Toyota radio.

Maybe someone that bought a kit from Ramsey Electronics and has no idea how an antenna can affect range?
