Also, some of the Walkmans seem to vary in their selectivity.

I have two SRF 37s.  One stays in my briefcase for my traveling (and has longwave). The other stays at home.  I run into the same thing with strong local signals as you do.  10 or 12 upper adjacent local channels get wiped out.  But once get away from close proximity of those, the selectivity is actually pretty decent.

In my own example, I'm a couple of miles from daytime locals on 850 and 1030.  These two pretty much wipe out the middle of the band.  But I'm about 25 miles from three Chicago blowtorches on 670, 720, and 780.  I'm able to snag WFAN, WOR, and WABC from underneath the Chicago "1-As" with the Walkman on a fairly regular basis.

Next week I have a 10-day trip coming up to Ontario, New England, and Ohio. Driving.  I could bring along one of the more "robust" portables.  But I'll probably opt to save space and go with just the SRF 37.   Won't be the best possible DX option...but it won't disappoint me either!  (Although being east, the temptation to try for some TA DX still might sway me to bring one of the other radios after all.)

aka the Sangean ATS-808. Well, I'm not an expert in the differences between your DX-380/ATS-808 and my DX-440/ATS-803a, but if the performance of my DX-440 is something to go by, you should definitely be able to bag some Asians with your DX-380!

I'm pressed for time tonight, but I'll soon post some of the Asian power houses for you.

Tincap....

I'm going to be right up the road from you Monday night in Ottawa.  Well...actually the hotel is by the 417 and Terry Fox in Kanata.  Relatively noise free...even with all the big box stores, restaurants, etc. nearby. I've talked myself into taking the DX 375.  Any tips or suggestions?

Cyberdad, if you have the chance please report on the reception of the Chicago clears while driving past the Detroit metro during the day. I'm specifically interested if you can hear WSCR & WLS there. I'm pretty sure WGN & WBBM make it.

Thanks!

I'll report, but I won't hit Motown until Friday, the 30th. (I've got a rather convoluted schedule this time around).

From memory, I'm going to say that WSCR definitely makes it to Detroit and beyond into Canada for about a half hour on the 401 freeway before it finally succumbs to splatter from CFTR.  WGN doesn't have an adjacent channel problem (now that CHYR/710 is off). It gets to Windsor and points east, but is weaker than WSCR.  WBBM gets chewed up in much the metro by WJR and CKLW.  Still, it makes it into Canada, if barely.  I've heard WLS around the Detroit airport (west of town), but going east of there, it doesn't survive the 25 miles or so of Detroit-Windsor urban landscape.

All of this assumes a good car radio.  No guarantee my rental unit will have one.

That would coincide with some radio history in the making (at least from what I've read), that being CBE leaving 1550 for good.  Supposedly they were going to continue the FM simulcast through the month of September.

Tips? Yes, the food at the Royal Oak is great! Cheesy

I teach classes up in Ottawa, on Mondays, until 4:30pm, but my wife will be with me that day and she's on a hectic schedule, otherwise I'd try for a little hook up with you there, Cyber. As for the radio end of things, hmmm...no LW on the DX 375, so you'll be cut out of that action. Bring your laptop, with your most important links - especially http://www.emwg.info/ - and keep us posted. What I'll do (note to self) is concentrate on some DXing that evening and post them (as I normally do) for you to give a go.

Speaking of...semi-regular Absolute Radio on 1215 kHz is trying to push its way past strong adjacents WPHT and WHKW. I'm getting audio, at times, but the other two are really difficult to null out tonight.

DX

Been to the Royal Oak!  For several years I had a customer who was basically right behind there on Stacie Dr. (parallel to March Rd.)  We used to go to the Royal Oak for lunch...and indeed I remember the food there as being really good.  One time we were there with my boss...who was in "hog heaven" because they had his favorite, Smithwick's, on draft (which at the time was unavailable in the U.S.)   The Barley Mow about a mile up the road (by the Loeb's and the Burger King) isn't half bad, either IIRC.

You're right, no LW on the DX-375, but I can set it to 9khz spacing, so I'll check out 1215, 747, 1134, along with the other usual suspects Monday night.  I'm not sure how good I'll be able to do "barefoot" in the hotel room, but we'll see what happens.  I'll see if I can get a room away from the elevator, ice machine, etc.  As for LW, I will also have the LW equipped version of the SRF-37.  But so far, IME, that radio has been pretty useless for LW.

Sorry I'll miss a chance to "meet up", but hopefully one of these times when I'm going through Ottawa or or Brockville.
