KMIK HD radio reception in Australia
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:29:54 AM »

Hi

KMIK & KBLA were both huge tonight. KMIK was flashing the "HD" logo. Even a faux CALL SIGN came up on the display!!! "OFMN" was displayed instead of "KMIK"   Shocked - so at least I got some sort of PAD data, even if not correct  Grin

receiver: Sony XDR-F1HD HD radio / 200m longwire

Yep: up there "in the glove compartment" (higher AM/MW frequencies beyond 1500 kHz) the propagation is pretty much like shortwave at times.  And 1580's got a 6-tower night pattern with four lobes - by far the biggest one is aimed right at you, mate.  I bet the effective field in that lobe is a multiple of 50kw.

I know the OP fairly well.  This reception is not uncommon for him!  When KMIK was KCWW & running AM Stereo, he actually got a stereo signal....I heard it on tape myself!

KMIK, and to a lesser extent KBLA, throw huge 50 k lobes at the Pacific.  (How *both* got 50k authority, much less ANY night operation---weren't both stations daytime-only at one time?---is anyone's guess.)

I ask this because there's supposed to also be a non-directional 50kW 1580 in Hermosillo in Mexico, not really that far away!

The KBLA pattern coming from a site very near downtown LA has the rough equivalent of 400 kw in the night lobe. Almost all the power goes into about a 35° arc, which gives that huge power in the main lobe. KTNQ and 1150 in LA have similar big, big lobes (and they are diplexed).

Did you actually receive the stations in IBOC or did you just receive the data and flash the HD logo? The reason I ask is that the HD letters also flashed on my Sony at night on several IBOC stations from hundreds of miles away but I could never receive them in IBOC. In fact I could never even receive a 5KW station here in HD from ten miles away which blasts in in analog. This was with 400 ft long wires. I'm in a better location now with two beverage antennas, I might pull out the Sony from my storage space and see what happens here with these antennas.

I'm not the OP, but I can tell you that I often get the flashing HD logo without the HD/IBOC effect.  My local Radio Disney WMYM 990 in Miami displays "WMYM" on the Sony, but I never ever get the HD signal, as I am too far from their tight pattern.  (KMIK is also Radio Disney.)

The only HD signal I get is WSUA 1260 Miami....nice and consistent in the day, but sporadic at night.

Frankly, I am still awaiting Radio Enciclopedia in Cuba (AM 530) to go HD.....not holding my breath  Wink

Radio Reloj has been broadcasting on 861 lately, I caught them on their first night last month.

Fidel and Raoul paying royalties to iBiquity for HD-AM?  THAT would be the day.

These guys are still living in the Bay Of Pigs days.  Last I knew Radio Havana was still presiding over the old Radio Swan SW frequency of 6000 kHz, that simulcast the anti-Castro American AM 1160 off the Honduran coast.

"Dollars for propaganda, but not one penny for tribute, RF robber-baron capitalists from Maryland!"   Cheesy

(To say nothing of the fact that if, as one suspects, the number of HD-AM receivers in daily use in North America can conveniently be totted up on the fingers and toes of all frequent posters here, the number of potential HD listeners in Cuba has to be a NEGATIVE number.)   Wink

How many signal bars was the analog signal registering?

I only have the included loop with my Sony, and with the overcrowded AM dial in the states, its hard to pull in much at a distance without a good setup. My farthest HD lock with call letters so far is WBBM at around 600 miles and it was coming in with 3/3 bars on my Sony that night.

Getting a US based signal from Australia is pretty amazing itself, but getting some HD data is impressive.

KMIK peaks at 3 bars. HD audio would never decode as most of the digital carrier would be buried under 1575 (Wollongong NSW) & 1584 (Narooma NSW). the het from 1584 tends to be very annoying.
