Could there be a possibility WPLJ will pick up alt-rock by Jan. 6, '06? If WPLJ flips from hot AC to alt-rock, then WNEW could throw in some hot AC/AAA based artists.

very doubtful. allthough I wish. you have to keep in mind that alt rock is a dying format on fm or as it seems right now. take for example in the last two or so years how many stations have flipped from alt rock to either rock or something else. 103.7 fnx 104.1 wmrq, 92.3 k-rock. 92.9 saugrities, 1003. in philly and lastly wlir both 92.7 and recently 107.1. this is just my opinion and i hope it helped. > Could there be a possibility WPLJ will pick up alt-rock by > Jan. 6, '06? If they were to change formats at all it would be oldies, Scott Shannon's true oldies most likely. Unfortunately NYC will be without a current based rock station for tthe forseeable future. If Q104 did it (and I dont see why they would) they would have to blow it up and scrap the entire airstaff, no way can guys that were extolling the virtues of Tull "Aqualung" tomorrow be credible talking about how much they love Shinedown etc.

The station was remarkably bland - about 30 or so currents combined with a pitiful library of about 200 songs, all tiresome overplayed hits. The station was a total mess - I remember when they actually added a Kelly Osbourne song to their playlist ... how sad is that? The problem was that CBS/Infinity was way more in touch with K-Rock's advertisers than their audience, which gradually faded over time. And who the heck wants to hear Metallica into the Killers into Limp Bizkit anyway? What happened to WXRK is what happens when you play it too safe with the modern rock audience - they will quickly get bored and abandon you. If done the right way, Modern Rock can succeed in NYC - it just take someone with the drive and the knowledge to do it.

WPLJ bills very well and does pretty well in their target demo. You theory doesn't make since either. Mix isn't going after PLJ, they are mainly competing with KTU and maybe Lite a little. If WPLJ were to flip to Alternative Rock (just for the sake of discussion), then maybe WCBS FM could go Hot AC. If 95.5 changed it's calls, then it could become 101.1 WPLJ. They could still keep much of the music from Jack's playlist, but change the imaging and presentation, and add WPLJ's jocks (if they were fired). Discuss on my theory (even though this wouldn't happen) > ______________ The Place for the Latest Happenings in Radio www.freewebs.com/radiostuffandnews

I have to disagree with you there they didnt play it too safe at all in fact that didnt play the tight songs and they werent the safe ones. They got right abord the Limp Bizkit bandwagon because Steve Kingston's whole orientation was New Jjersey he thought that the only way to get an audience was to superserve the angry teens, and that is a major reason why they failed. By the time Rob Cross came into the picture they were well established as the nu metal station that could never shakle that rep that and the fact that New York is just not a rock town I know noone likes hearing it but all rock sticks ahave failed WNEw the legendary station witha one share which is getting better numbers now playing classic dance than they ever did as a rock station, Q104 which in truth was one of teh worst programmed active rock stations ever heard and finally krock.

Nope, no chance of that happening... Alt rock is a dying format, as is AAA, and 50's basd oldies... > Could there be a possibility WPLJ will pick up alt-rock by > Jan. 6, '06? My_Humps: > > Why would WPLJ experiment with a format that has FAILED WXRK > and PLJ is doing well with its demographics? > > > > > Thanks, > Actually, K-Rock performed better, though marginally so, with the Alt-Rock format (especially the Flashback lunch hour) than it has as a "mainstream" rock station. As for 'PLJ, it would hardly be foolhardy for them to play some of the CHR-leaning alt-rock hits from the '90s such as "I Kissed a Girl" by Jill Souble or "Peaches" by the Presidents of the United States.

Bah. The next format will be:
WKCD
All Koch, Cuomo, and Dinkins talk. They can all tell you how they had all the answers to everything. If you call, they will answer all of your questions regardless of topic. The station can announce the coming of the future King of All Media, Gov. Pataki, a year before he actually comes on. That way they can sell ads well in advance.
Weekend programming will consist of callers describing their favorite stump speech.
Once this format reaches number 1 in 25-54 demos, New Yorkers will no longer have a reason to not move to Ft. Lauderdale.
Booyah to PLJ.
