I would be very surprised if WRXP went all news. As was already mentioned, it is very costly to start up a brand new news operation especially in a market as large as NYC. On top of that you already have heritage news stations like WINS and WCBS that have been around for so long it seems like it would be virtually impossible to compete with them.

With Randy Michaels, nothing is impossible. In fact, it'll be "like magic".
Of course, easier said than done... but with Sabo and all the right people at the nucleus, whatever spoken-word format - and trust me, there will be a "day the music dies" this summer - that they'll be introducing on 101.9 in due time could be successful, limited or otherwise.

All of this seems weird to me and I have a hard time believing that RXP would flip to anything. What was the point of JUST adding Loveline to the station's lineup?? Despite what I said in another thread regarding this, this smells fishy...

I know, the timing... I suppose, now the question will be whether or not it will remain on 101.9's lineup under its new format.

I assume that it must take several weeks for a sale of a station to go through FCC and other governmental regulatory agencies before it can be consummated. I vaguely remember reading that it takes at least 45 days.
I am one of the few people who owns an HD radio. I still listen to the smooth jazz on 101.9 HD2. I wonder what Merlin will do with that? Perhaps they will move the rock format to that. We'll just have to wait.

Perhaps they might create a third channel. If I'm not mistaken, I think both WCBS 880 and 1010 WINS state that they are on HD3 on FM (WCBS on CBS FM and WINS on WWFS). Are there any other stations with a third FM channel?

Yes, WFAN-AM is simulcast on WXRK HD3, and WABC-AM is simulcast on WPLJ HD3.

Didn't the FCC force stations to have separate programming on their AM and FM stations years ago? I wonder if the stations plan on leaving these simulcasts that way until policy changes again. I'm surprised it's happening on TV particularly, with so many duplicate broadcasts.

I'm sure that edict only affects the main (read: "HD-1") signals of the stations, and not so much the subchannels. In fact, I believe it was issued at a time when HD Radio had yet to exist... which, in a perfect world, would have been the last 2,000 years or so!

I assumed that is the way it is, but with so many stations just airing simulcasts, just wondering if the FCC might come up with any ideas to reclaim space that isn't used for original programming?
