Beck neither understands what the Hitler Youth was nor, obviously, does he understand what the camp on the Norwegian island was.

I doubt that many people have ever heard of the youth camp.  Maybe we need to know more before making comments about Beck.  I went through 41 pages of Google before I found anything other than info about the attacks.  Here's what I finally did find:

Still not an excuse to make such a inane comment.  It wasn't offensive but Beck is famous for comparing everything and everyone to Hitler: Obama, non-christians, cabbage, ect.

I believe Hitler's youth camps were also anti-Israel.  So Beck's in the ballpark.  It may be a stretch, but that's not unusual for conservative OR liberal talk radio & TV.

That’s not possible, Israel became a nation in 1948.

Splitting hairs.  Let's say anti-Jews.

I'm just wondering.....

Who is "The Fuhrer" of Norway?  Huh

Who are the youth groups there named after?  Huh

What group of people is the scapegoat of the Norwegian government?  Huh

Just what kind of threat is Norway to Europe and the world?  Huh

Oh yeah, great analogies by Beck. Championship stuff.  Huh

I think you guys are purposely spinning this in a direction that Glenn Beck didn't go. He didn't say that Norway is anything like Nazi Germany or that a Hitler-type figure was leading this youth camp. He simply implied that "Political Youth Camps" was one tactic that the Nazis used to indoctrinate the German youth. You can read the comments and see exactly what he said.

Those who don't like Glenn Beck are spinning these comments in a direction he didn't go, just to serve there own political agenda.

Yup.  Probably should have been here in the first place.

Plenty of Jews don't support Israel. Anti-semitism and anti-Israel sentiment are two very different things.

Wasn't the Hitler Youth mandatory? Was this youth camp in question mandatory?

Wasn't the Hitler Youth mandatory?

Not initially.  Beginning as early as the 1920's there were hundreds of youth groups in Germany.  After Hitler came to power he consolidated all others into the Hitler Youth.  For boys it was pre-military training and for girls it was introduction to motherhood.  The main focus for both males and females was discipline and physical fitness in addition to political indoctrination.  Because it was possible to pay membership fees but not actually attend the camps, attendance fell to about 25% in 1938.  In 1939 the government made attendance mandatory.

Was this youth camp in question mandatory?

The Norwegian youth camp was a gathering of teenagers belonging to a youth wing of Norway's Labor Party.  It was political in nature (much like the Young Republicans and Young Democrats in the USA) but in other respects did not function anything like the Hitler Youth.  Membership was voluntary.
