107.9 The Link PD?
« on: November 05, 2011, 09:57:48 PM »

Does 107.9 have a PD yet?  They're sounding kinda stale lately (musically, at least) and the music mix is a little odd at times.  Just a handful of currents.  Too bad they can't go for a more focused "fresh AC" sound like MY 102.5/WMYI down here in Greenville has, who does a very good job - they play more Hot AC sounding stuff.  I think it would go over well.

Huh? I thought WMYI was a true hot AC now and WLNK was just hinting at it.

WMYI still reports to Mediabase as AC.

That's irrelevant. It's not even close to AC the way your thread describes it.

I don't think they can ever decide if they want to be a talk station that plays music, or a music station that has talk. Either way, I just, wish they would go back to an omnidirectional antenna that provides a strong signal to the west of Charlotte, rather than directed to a narrow area to the east. They used to have a very strong signal in Greenville, SC, just like 95.1. And if they are going to have talk, then bring back Pam Stone.

I think a straight up Hot AC approach would work.  They sound too much like 102.9 and 104.7, musically.  I think the market can definitely support it.  They should be very music-intensive outside of AM drive, and they should play more music then.

IMO, the reason Hot AC didn't work well for them is back when they were doing it, they had those lifestyle talk shows literally all day.  That's a really niche format.  The numbers started going up around the time they went more towards AC, but also around that time they dropped a lot of the talk shows (mid-days and nights, and that "Saturday Morning Workout" stuff), if I recall.

What is Hot A/C, AC and Soft A/C.  The definations keep changing and very according to your age and music tastes.  Lots of the old guard of A/C have been pushed off to make way for the newer artists that I would hardly define as A/C but then that's due to my age group and what I'm used to.

That was in response though to declining ratings around 1999-2000, when they stayed Hot AC all day - the personality/talk stuff increased ratings, not decreased them (until it finally started to burn at the end of the decade)

Charlotte's changed a lot in the past 12 years, though - I think if it'd be worth trying again instead of being one of 3 AC stations...although 107.9 is different.  Their mix is unique for an AC, fresh AC, or hot AC - not many of these stations play Marky Mark, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Bobby Brown, or Technotronic alongside Bon Jovi, U2, Green Day, etc.  I just think they could be a little more focused.

What is Hot AC?  WPLJ, New York, WBMX, Boston.  etc, etc.  Top 40 without the rap/hip-hop.  Light rap is ok, i.e. Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO, etc.  An occasional 80's tune (1 or less an hour), a handful of 90's and heavy on the re-currents.  Just peruse the northeast radio dial.  Their are Hot AC's everywhere.  My homestate, NH only has two chr's and one of those chr's (WJYY) is borderline Hot ac.   Check out WKNE, WERZ, WLNH, WGXL all in my homestate.  All great Hot Ac's.   An excellent example of a local Hot AC is sat fed WKBC 97.3.  I personally love the format as a 40 year old guy.  Charlotte has two CHR's, two country, two AC's, sometimes 3 when WLNK gets confused., two sports, two Urban AC's, two mexican.  It's kind of ridiculous not to have a hot ac.  I find myself listening to country alot even though I do like 60% of the music on Kiss and Channel.  But when the hip hop comes on, I hit scan.

Ooops...I forgot...TWO classic rock stations!
