WCBS picked up daytime in Charleston, SC
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:56:16 AM »

Yesterday, I was sitting in a local grocery store parking lot about 12:35pm or so and scanning the dial, and on 880 WCBS came in. It was a partly cloudy day, with more clouds than sun. It was above the noise level for probably 15 minutes and you could definitely tell it was them.

Last night, several of Charlotte's FMs were coming in on my car radio (including 104.7), but not 15 minutes later, it switched to stations from Savannah and south.

Good catch of WCBS.

It goes to show how unpredictable daytime skywave can be.

I've always wondered how after the distant stations vanish once the sun is up they can return again midday and at only certain frequencies but not others.

I don't think the clouds were a factor, though.

This time of the year it is probably daytime skywave. Up on the Outer Banks in North Carolina it is easy to pull in many of the 50kw NYC stations during the day via ocean groundwave. The cheap clock radio where I was staying was able to get WCBS during the day there. But Charleston is quite a bit further so ocean based groundwave of WCBS would be harder.
