106.7 no HD?
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:41:39 PM »

Or am I just too far in Smyrna. recently got a JVC HD radio at Best Buy for the car to replace the trusty Eclipse who's CD transport is dead. Surprisingly this $79 radio with built-in HD tuner does a heck of a job. I was HOPING to hear the Smooth Jazz stream listed out there, but the only thing on 106.7 is analog.

It could have something to do with a translator CP at 93.5 in Suwanee. Grin

The main 106.7 / 104.7 antenna failed quite a while back, so WYAY has been using their HD antenna for the analog.  Hence, no antenna left for HD, since it's a space-combined setup.  The replacement antenna has been delivered and will be up soon.

Some folks read too much into these things...

good to know, I am glad I got this radio. I am actually kind of impressed with the sound quality of some HD content, WSB-FM HD2 is kind of like a throwback to the Peach 94.9 of the early 90's. It's also nice that the original CHRISTMAS FREE B98.5 is on WSRV's HD2, nice to NOT hear that drudge (sorry for being the scrooge).

I'll keep 106.7 in the presets, I've been listening quite a bit to them more, seem to be going deeper with some 70's and 80's, almost like Dave minus alternative, but I really miss smooth jazz. I was dismayed at first but I figured something was up.

Sidenote: the JVC KD-HD44 is a great CHEAP HD radio head unit. It's on sale for 79.99 at Best Buy. It actually sounds good, though the user interface takes some getting used to. It also plays MP3/WMA CD's and has a front and rear aux jack. It has one of the best front ends of any aftermarket radio on both FM AND AM, the AM is particularly sensitive and selective. I've never been a fan of anything JVC but this is a great product if you want to get HD radio in your dash for not much cash.

96.1 HD2 is a good 99X clone, found myself listening to this a bit.
98.5 HD2 is a great road rage prevention tool. Sounds like 97.1 HD2 is B98.5 without X-mas washouts or commercials, though it drops out quite a bit in and around Cobb. No problems receiving any other HD except maybe 97.5 but their analog signal isn't that strong here either.
92.9 HD2 seems to have gone away as of a couple of days ago. They are still in HD, but no more subchannel Dave Roots. Wonder if this is due to a problem or worse yet, an upcoming format change?

the biggest question is what Star 94 is doing on HD2. sounds like the same programming on their main. Why bother with this? couldn't they get a higher bit rate on their main HD stream by deleting HD3 and moving their 93.7 to HD2? Maybe I missed something but this seems pointless.

V103 has some neo-soul sounding stuff on their HD2 which I couldn't quite get into. Other than that, just waiting for 106.7 to get their HD back online.
