I agree. They target women, most definitely. I think they've made a lot of flubs, but aside from Chuck-FM (which is probably a 50/50 male/female station), if you don't like country, the male-oriented stations here are unlistenable. Choices are limited.
Yeah, I'm not saying that they aren't trying to primarily target women, but as you say, I think it's ignorant to think that there won't be a fair amount of men listening to it as well. Even though country is big in the South, I still even feel that demo as a whole probably leans more towards women as well. Gushing about the latest country hunk or sympathizing with the sad country ballads by the female singers. That's a big generalization, but that's been my experience. Most men want rock. And those stations are basically unlistenable around here. So where are we going to go...to something that at least sounds modern enough to not bore us to tears and not sappy enough to put us to sleep. The only choices as far as I'm concerned are Chuck and MY. I favor MY only because Chuck does go to a bit older demographic. So basically, all I'm saying is I don't think it's wrong for us to say what we think "fits" with MY because it's not just women that listen to it and even if it targets them, there's certain things that just don't fit their "fresh" or Hot AC programming. I agree with your synopsis of country but I don't have much knowledge of the format myself. I'd say that 92.5 WESC is male-oriented. They play less of the gushy/rock sounding/"hot" country and have more of a "raw" sound that probably appeals to middle aged/older males, while WSSL 100 appeals more to younger males/females and middle-aged females, as it's a modern country station. I like Chuck and MY the most as well. I used to like Magic when I wanted to hear something older, but with Chuck on the air, I like their mix more than Magic, so I don't really listen to them much anymore. I will say that MY sounded extremely good Friday night - they were in a set where they played "Without You", "Party Rock Anthem", and "Stereo Hearts" almost in a row it seems - sounded like B-93.7. I've heard some other 'different' rhythmic stuff like Mike Posner and Travie McCoy, as well. The only issue with what they're doing at night, is that it's making them sound even less 'fresh' during the day, even though they've made changes then as well.

I really, highly doubt that they'll do anything live at night. 93.7 and 98.1 are the only live stations at night. 93.3 used to be.
As for 102.5, it sounds like they are not playing any pre-90s music now, at least at night. It seems like they are playing more fresh/new/current music too. January has definitely been their best month so far for adding new music.
Yep! Was listening tonight on the way back from Myrtle Beach and was pleasantly surprised. They did a pretty good job of making Aaron Rogers sounding local. I actually thought it was someone local until I saw this thread. But yes, not a single 70s or 80s song that I heard on the way home (not that I mind some 80s in there). On an offtopic note, the trip reinforced my feelings that The Planet is the worst rock station in the state. Rock 94.5 in Columbia was sounding pretty good and everything else I heard even in Florence and Myrtle Beach was at least "ok" and definately better than WTPT. Yes, he does sound very good and local. More so than Dave Kent (who is at WKSL/Raleigh), but he is not bad. They sound the best tonight, IMO, that they have since they started - I wonder if they'll keep this sound all day, or just at night (some stations go more modern/aggressive at night). This was what they sounded like for around 90 mins tonight: Colbie Caillat- Brighter Than The Sun Howie Day - Collide Miley Cyrus - The Climb Fray- Over My Head/Cable Car Train - Meet Virginia Adele - Set Fire To The Rain U2 - Beautiful Day Usher/Willi.I.Am - OMG Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger Coldplay - Violet Hill P!nk - Raise Your Glass Taylor Swift - Love Story Lady Gaga - You & I Killers - Mr. Brightside Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling Kid Rock - All Summer Long Goo Goo Dolls - Slide Gavin DeGraw - Not Over You Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You Daughtry - No Surprise Adele - Someone Like You In addition to the new Gavin DeGraw and Adele songs I've never heard them play locally, they played Usher/David Guetta's "Without You" and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away", which are climbing up the AC/Hot AC charts. I think WARQ in Columbia and WKZQ in MYB are great rock stations, much better and more 'polished' than The Planet. WTPT is just terrible. I read another thread about that. Anyone try 94.3 the Dam in Florence?

When WHLZ 92.5 moved to 100.5 and disappeared from this and most areas. Shortly after 92.5 moved to Charleston but while it was off the air during the move we could listen to WESC 92.5 while driving around with no trouble. I don't know if they are still the same as they were back then but I really liked their blend of country music. Also it seems that rock music just doesn't seem to be doing well in many parts of South Carolina, and I don't understand why but if you look at the station that have changed around the state a lot them were rock format.

A while back, classic rock made up over half the playlist. Am I the only one noticing Planet more alternative/hard rock mix? I realize it's been going on for a while but never actually paid attention that they were phasing the classic rock out more and more.

The idea that a lot of men will listen to MYI is a pipe dream. They're having enough trouble getting women to listen. If #9 out of 10 full signal FM's is success, they're at the top of their game.

Never thought that MY will get "a lot of men" to listen to it. But just saying that there are men that will listen to it just because of the lack of choices in the area. I still think the two rock stations in the area are poor in comparison to others in the state and South as a whole. If we had a better rock station, I may not even be listening to MY at all. Just that people in my age group (male and female) -- the so-called Generation X -- are at least IMO a bit too old to enjoy all of what B93.7 plays and too young to like Magic. And with two rock stations that cater either to hard rock or classic rock, neither of which seem to appeal to the friends I talk to, there's little choice other than country. So if you don't like country, there's not much else to choose from. Yes, MY is definately going towards women. But it's just a better match for a lot of my friends, who are male, just because of the lack of choices in the Upstate. I still have hopes that we'd get a better rock station here, but for now, I hope MY survives. And choices like getting rid of Delilah were, again just my opinion, a step in the right direction. Only time will tell...I would just hate to see another choice on the radio dial go away. No need for MY and Magic to do traditional AC together. And country is pretty well covered. Choice is nice. Whether the ratings will keep it that way is another thing. But prior to MYs flip and Chuck-FM, variety at least in terms of well-programmed stations was severely limited in this area. MY has struggled a bit in the "well-programmed" area, but it's still better than things like the Planet, which is just a mess.

I don't think the Planet was ever more than half classic rock. You might be thinking of the defunct Buzzard, which despite it's old/new mix, was still a better overall rock station than the Planet. The problem with the Planet is they claim to be "New Rock" but ignore 80% of the new rock that's out there. They focus primarily just on the harder Slipknot-style, screaming rock. And, yes, they still do play some 70s songs that don't sound right at all in their mix. My issue with the station is that they pretty much completely ignore the more mainstream "new rock". And that's where stations like Rock 93.5 in Columbia do a somewhat better job (still not as good as something like Rock 104.5 in Philly). As has been expressed before, it just doesn't make sense as the music is unlistenable (at least in my taste), but the station continues even with very low ratings.

The Buzzard was the one that played a lot of classic rock at times. Was much better than 93.3. The Planet claiming to play "New Rock" is like B-93.7 saying they play "All The Hits" and playing Madonna and KC & The Sunshine Band!

MY has struggled a bit in the "well-programmed" area, but it's still better than things like the Planet, which is just a mess. I was gonna post this yesterday, but it never submitted, so here goes again....anything done on 102.5 since their recent change is better than their attempt at traditional AC since the latter part of the 2000s. Terrible. In the 90s and in to the 00s, they were one of the best AC's in the southeast and killed Magic (I'm sure there are posters on here that will vouch for that) Looking at things in the past couple of years, that's hard to believe, but is the way it was. I think 97.7 does a good job at catering to Generation X. I'm sure 97.7 gets way more GenX males than MY. Yes, they play some old stuff, but a ton of the playlist is 80s and they play 90s as well (the majority of which overlaps with MY). I wouldn't mind at some point seeing an adult leaning CHR on 102.5 like Clear Channel has done in several markets, should their current attempt not improve. Would be a nice compromise between Hot AC and mainstream CHR which favors rhythmic material so much. I agree about there not being much to choose from outside of country, Chuck, and Magic if you want something decently programmed and are over 25. I usually have high respect for Entercom, as I've said, but I have a feeling that if most any other company owned 93.3, it wouldn't sound like it does.

I have been listening to Chuck more lately as they seem to have skewed a little more towards 80s and 90s (not sure if this was done from feedback or what, but they don't seem to play quite as much 60s and 70s as they were). Guess my problem in general is there is no station here, and maybe I'm one of the few that feels this way, that I can listen to consistantly without flipping. When I'm at work, I listen to stations from other cities (primarily the aforemention Rock 104.5 in Philly) and most of the time when I listen to rock stations outside the market, I honestly feel little need to change what I'm listening to. Can't say the same around here. But this is a mid-sized market in the South so I can't say I know everything the so-called experts in radio know about this market. Still, I've been to similar sized cities, even in South Carolina, that seem to have at least one or two well-programmed stations that appeal to my age group outside of country. Don't know what Entercom is thinking, but they surely could do something better with 93.3. And that's really just one station. There are several others -- like 96.7 -- that continually get low ratings. Just think there's opportunities in this market that exist. With as fast as this area is growing, I'd venture to say that almost half the population is not from the Greenville area to begin with. So it's not just another Southern town anymore.
