Noticed Monday evening (2/20) that KROI has killed the stereo pilot, following the suggestion of some of us on this board.

Stereo not needed for a spoken word format, and the mono signal will help reception in the northern part of the market.

KROI never had their stereo pilot on?

They did--until last week.

What happened?  They were touting the superior sound of FM over AM (alluding to Stereo) when they first started.  Programming sounds flat in mono.

Stereo can be an asset.  "Hear the World in STEREO" is a good tag line for their billboards.

After a look at the recent ratings, I think it is question of quanity vs quality.
If KROI were on a stronger signal like 102.1 they would be in stereo.

Why is Arbitron still listing them as gospel?

The Arbitron e-book reads "All News."

I hope Houston All-News operations for KROI does well in the future. I hope KROI does not go in the direction on WEMP in NYC. I hope they are more of the direction of KCBS in SFO or WBBM in Chicago or 1010 WINS.

It's been a while since I listened.  I was very excited for the station and even had it on quite a bit during the Holiday season.  They turned me off with the words "Extensive GOP Presidental Debate Coverage."  If I wanted to hear that, I would listen to KTRH.  So much for "all news, no spin."

A debate is a legitimate news event open to analysis and commentary...News 92 FM would also give equal coverage to a democratic primary debate as well.  The difference is the other station you refer to doesn't even carry the debates and would most likely not cover a democratic debate either except maybe to apply Breitbart/Hannity/Levin selective analysis.

The building permits were finally approved a few weeks ago. The construction is only beginning.

The superiority of FM (that being that you can sit at a traffic light and not get a buzz from the power lines or be able to pick the station up after dark after the night pattern kicks in) remains without the pilot.
Second-adjacent stereo KUHA comes to Katy fine in mono, so most radios can turn the pilot off automatically in a weak signal area.  For car radios, where this type of format is the most useful, the signal is strong enough for stereo in North Harris County.  If coverage area is a concern, look at the HD--why not shut-off the HD instead?  According to another poster KGLK used to be listenable to Madisonville, but after HD, it's now listenable up to Conroe.

R 1 put the "old" Gospel format on the HD2, even gave away some HD radios for the fans that "lost" their Gospel station.  The last thing you want (PR wise) is a bunch of preachers and church people mad at you.
