Sunbeam vs. DirecTV
« on: January 20, 2012, 06:06:07 AM »

This is being discussed on the New England TV board since WHDH and WLVI in Boston are involved, but in Miami, they own Fox station WSVN, which will "allow" DirecTV to air the NFC Championship Game this weekend, despite Sunbeam's stations being yanked off DirecTV a week from today. How nice. (golf clap)

I don't usually side with the cable-sat companies over the broadcasters, but in this case, good for DirecTV.

All of Sunbeam's stations put waaaaay too much emphasis on their news product and pretty much act like a MyNet affil when it comes to syndicated content. Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, Comics Unleashed and Cash Cab do not belong on a Market 16 Fox affiliate (which WSVN) is, and their weekend schedules outside of network and news is all infomercial and Byron Allen product. WHDH is barely better (at least they have Access Hollywood), but still infomercial packed. Won't compare WLVI because their schedule is as expected for an average CW affiliate.

Because of this (and of course their tabloid-heavy news product), 300% is not only unjustified, but incredibly insulting. And it basically screams to other cable operators 'yup, you get to pay alot more to carry stations that don't try outside network hours'. Fox has to perturbed too as WSVN basically is ashamed of them, not even using any kind of branding, but it's a high-number station, and they have few other choices they can go to in Miami.

Update... Nothing like a Super Bowl to light a fire underneath both parties' rear ends to get a deal done.

They should be happy for the cable and satellite coverage, if not few would be watching over the air. When it started its tabloid style news it looked fresh and high tech....now it looks old and stale. They deliberately keep a revolving door in the news department, I could not name any news person at WHDH.
WBZ, WCVB and WFXT have eliminated some of talent in the news department butI can still name at least some of the on air people.
Having know a few at WHDH Ed Ansin is a real piece of work and by now must be older than dirt, time for Howie Carrs death pool? should have sold to NBC when OTA's had real value. Bostonians do not like nameless faceless on air personel brought in from Salt Lake City or Dallas. Remember the WNEV campaign when
they discovered their big new talent in a motel room in Iowa...I can't remember the pretty boys name...a clone of Tom Netherton from the Lawrence Welk show.
