Quad Cities KUUL flips to CHR
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:17:24 PM »

Clear Channel flipped KUUL from Oldies to CHR Kiss 101.3.  This is Clear Channel's return to the CHR format since WHTS "All Hit 98.9" was sold to the K-Love folks in 2006.

Clear Channel's Premium Choice content will air most of the day with Elvis Duran, Ryan Seacrest, Billy The Kid, Jo Jo Wright and Sisane.  Todd Alan, who was recently moved from sister station Mix 96, will do PM drive and will be the only local air personality.

I called this a long time ago, 101.3 Kiss FM. It was only a matter of time. It's nice to have 2 options again. Now, will we be seeing Star 93.5 going to the "true Oldies" format from the AM? Or do they let that go. Does anyone have an aircheck of the format flip? Would love to hear it!

Here's an idea: Maybe 101.3 can air current pop music AND keep the classic hits? After all, WLLR has a sub-channel for classic country.

Also, while I'm at it, here's another sub-channel idea: Remember when Q106.5 used to "flush the format" while Dwyer and Michaels were on there? Maybe they could promote that on an HD2 channel...

It will be interesting to see what response there is, if any from B100.  During the time I have monitored it, about an hour or so in total, Kiss is playing a couple of songs that have been on the CHR/Pop chart for a while, but B100 has not played them other than on the syndicated Open House Party or occasionally on Billy Bush.  They are also beating them on a couple of new dance tracks.

B100 is live and local from 6AM to 7PM, so they have that going for them.  But the Jan Jeffries mandated dayparting of music could hurt them now that there is a direct competitor with full market coverage.  And I hate to say it, but the average listener doesn't care if the DJ's are syndicated.  They just want to hear the hits.

after they "Gutted" KOOL and put on the voice trackers and syndication it was pretty obvious they didn't care much about the station, i guess the only thing that surprizes me was how long it took for them to finally blow up kool. there is an 'Instant-Audience' now without a station waiting to be had, Who will step up to the plate?Huh

Cumulus could blow up Star and either move the True Oldies Channel that is on 1170 to 93.5, or put a locally programmed Oldies format on 93.5 if they found something else to put on 1170.  I have a feeling that they might dump some of their syndicated talkers, the new Huckabee show and such on either 93.5 or 1170.

The obvious choice would be for Star to become either an oldies station, or a country station. I don't know that they have enough shows available to them to take on WOC, plus WOC has a better signal. Talk on 1170 was a loser for them. Oldies on AM is not a bad place for it, that signal is not really worth anything.

I know Cumulus has tried country in the past and failed, but one has to believe that putting the format on would do better than what they have now. Then again, this signal is not that great either and might not hit the outlining areas. So maybe a switch to oldies would work.

Ultimate problem is, how do you do it? Take something canned like "true oldies" and try to make it work, run it on the cheap? Program local but who do you get? KUUL didn't have anyone really getting canned, since Mark and Steve went to WOC. And how do you sell that format? The average person who was 18 in 1965 would be 63, way out of demo for 18 to 54. I'm wondering if doing a true 70's and 80's only format would work? No 60's, focus on late 70's to mid 80's. Although my personal preference would be to have a "Gen X" radio, 90's and 2000's. That would not serve the Oldies listeners, but it would sure make things interesting over at Mix.

As of now, Cumulus is rapidly rolling out a format called "Great Country: The '90s to Now". It's debuted in Cincinnati, Kalamazoo and two or three other markets in recent weeks. It seems like a logical option to put on 93.5, if they were to decide on country for that signal.

crazy thing is... kuul was never at the bottom of the pack AND they had their Best Book in a couple of years, of course that never seems to matter when the "Suits" make up their minds to make a boneheaded decison.  i would bet the farm there will be another station like kuul on fm in the quads in the future.
