RIP "Personality" Radio
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:53:09 PM »

With the exception of sports and maybe talk radio, actual DJ's who were personalities, and were a reaon why one would listen to a particular music format are all but gone. I know I am dating my self but I am talking about Hy Lit, Joe Niagra at WIBG or George Michael or Jim O'Brian (all deceased). Can you think of anyone on the air today that plays music on the air and is a personality and is the reason why you listed (with the exception of Jerry Blavat and please don't even consider RJ in this catagory).

The only real personality I can think of and he is a ratings magnet on weekends is Big Joe Henry on NJ101.5. I really don't listen for the music but listen to hear Big Joe.

Can you think of anyone else that would be considered a DJ that's also a "personality"?

cARSON on Q102 is great!

Sadly the DJs on WISX are horrible.

Chio at WRDW is good, and 104.9 also has a great morning personality

The WMMR staff?
Pierre Robert, Preston & Steve, Matt Cord etc.  The DJs that were on Y-100.

Do they have to be local? Because I'll count Ryan Seacrest, Elvis Duran, and Delilah.

I like all the WMMR djs, even part timers like Brent Porsche and Blake Dannen are fun to listen to. I also enjoyed Spike and Gordon from WYSP.

Yeah, have to give props to Pierre. He has been a consistent presence on MMR. Like having your crazy hippy uncle sharing the car ride with you. For sure a personality. And thank god for that, because it's true. Personality radio is definitely on the way out.
But MMR seems to have its share. Its interesting that older-school DJs have found their way and/or remain there.

There are DJs in Philly who've been around a long time and work in Philly radio, but I wouldn't say many of them are or even have personalities.

Another one I like to hear but doesn't get enough air time anywhere is Michael Tearson. Guy's been around for a long time, knows his music and the artists, and is another guy I would say has/is a personality.

Yes, you are dating yourself indeed.  I have this self-efacing gag about "dating" myself, "...yes, I'm dating myself. But that's because the women won't return my calls! But seriously folks..."

Ok, back to the thread-- You must be old enough to remember radio's heyday, or you wouldn't be missing it so much.  You are not alone in your lamentation over the demise of radio personailities.  I miss them too, and I believe there are many others like us out there.  In my opinion, successful radio personalities were the ones whose on-air delivery styles made you think they were talking to you personally, as if you were their only listener.  Good radio personalities were artists who pirated listener's imaginations with the challenge to draw the picture themselves, since radio offered no video.  Alas, the day of radio artistry is long gone.

WMMR might very well have the best rock airstaff in the country.  Those 3, especially, are great.

I was wondering if Mike Bowe was still on the air in Philly.  I went to MikeBowe.com and looks like he is on WTKU 98.3 in Atlantic City on the weekends and fill ins.  I will check their stream this weekend.
