Univision going English?
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:10:32 AM »

From Taylor on Radio-Info:

If Univision starts an English-language TV news channel for Hispanics – look for a radio service, too.

The New York Times and others report talks between the two media companies for a 24-hour news channel that would specifically focus on national and world news from the perspective of Hispanics – providing coverage of Latin America, South America and the Caribbean that’s often missing in mainstream media. But why do it in English? Because Univision knows that second and third generation Hispanics are frequently switching back and forth, and some don’t even use Spanish that much. Here's a sign - Univision has begun running English subtitles in its popular prime-time “telenovelas." If an English-language news service is Univision’s goal for TV, you have to think that radio is also on its mind. Univision is the largest Spanish media company in America – by far.

The Beat is their only English-language radio station in SA.

Univision Radio has done so well with Spanish news talk, too (sarcasm intended.)

Nobody had done well in Spanish language news talk save a couple of stations in a few markets like LA, New York and Miami... and that was going on two decades ago.

And all of those past efforts, WADO, KTNQ and WAQI, were owned by the predecessor of Univision Radio. Unfortunately, there has never been a way to syndicate / network Spanish language talk over multiple markets and without the economy of scale that represents, the creation of local Spanish language talkers is not a viable project.

.

The Beat is their only English-language radio station in SA.

KXTN is predominantly English talk and commercials, with mostly Spanish language music. Univision has English language stations in Albuquerque, too; that is a market that parallels SA in language usage.

Univision also has radio formats in English. What's wrong with going bilingual?
