One Less at WA1A
« on: February 28, 2012, 06:21:31 PM »

Long time morning host Lisa Moldivan announced this morning she was leaving WA1A Melbourne (Cumulus), tomorrow (2/29).   She said she was retiring from radio on her own terms, to go work in the family business back in New York.  She'd been at the station 8 years (and had a long run before that as the morning voice for TV and Radio at AccuWeather).   She's already been taken off the web site.

This leaves exactly one talking head on WA1A - Timmy Vee, long time local dee-jay.   Outside of evenings with syndicated Billy Bush, AIA is a litteral juke-box ... no voice tracking, just music and liners except for 6-10am.

I was under the impression that WA1A was a local powerhouse at one time.  Unfortunately, while there are some threads on these boards discussing the fate of AM radio, I think we're staring to witness the demise of both AM and FM radio.  Live, local, relevent, and one-to-one has historically made this medium strong.  Obviously, with the advent of the internet, smartphones, mp3 players, etc., the media landscape has changed over the past 10 to 15 years, and adjustments have had to be made, but for music radio to shed one of it's unique advantages seems foolish.  I realize you've got to be mindful of the bottom line, but at the cost of destroying an entire industry?!  Maybe it's time to look beyond next month's sales figures!  Sad

Who's gone at A1A? I didn't think there was many left to be gone.
Wasn't one of the feamale jocks I think Lesa not only doing mornings, but VT 10A-7P until  Billy Bush was piped in?
That's the last I heard as far as DJ let go's at A1A.
I've not heard a DJ on weekends. Keep in mind its a DX target for me major.

Probably a nice girl but a bad radio voice.    Seriously, why is everyone sounding so surprised by this?   Most radio stations are juke boxes, name 2-3 stations in your market with live dj's in every daypart?HuhHuh??

I thought so......... Angry

vadar, No this trend to "robot radio" is NOT surprising to those of us who've cracked open a mic for many years for a living, and witnessed so many of those positions vanish. What's troubling, is the fact that a "major" station in a market is supposedly using only one live performer!  One would think that out of the 3 dayparts from 6a to 6p, at least 2 would be "live and local".  If a successful operation can't justify and support at least some local presence in "drive times", then something's wrong with the business model.  And I do realize, WA1A is not the exception, in this market, and many others.  Not a good omen.  That's all I'm sayin'... Undecided

Just saw elsewhere Cumulus cut ties with the syndicated Billy Bush on "all stations" ... now at A1A the one and only voice you hear is Timmy Vee.  Hate to say it, but he can't carry a morning show by himself - needs someone to guide him ... I'm thinking the station goes fully automated by summer.

I always thought that CHR would have more of a local presents with DJ's. Unless this mindset has changed in the past 6 or so years.
