Art...For me WSEV 930 is a novelty..a goof.  Sort of like listening to that silly Statler Brothers spoof on local Southern radio.  (Google "Lester Moran and his Caddillac Cowboys")   This station is it.  The few of us on this board, because it is SO horrible..are the only half dozen that can stand to spend more than 34 seconds listening to it.

Ooooh!  Two of my favorite people in conversation here...  Jeff and Art.

Not to hi-jack the thread,  but someone help my weary brain.  I see the Lester Moran group on the web...  but weren't the Statler Brothers spoofs about Lester "Roadhog" Muldoon?   Maybe the Moran group was a later spoof of the Statler's spoof.  There was another spoof-character that entered my life about the same year that I came face-to-face with the Statlers:  Orbie D Fuddpucker.  Was he part of their schitk?

All of this does tie in with hometown radio.  There were two radio stations in Staunton, VA circa 1971.  One was your traditional Class IV fulltimer,  the other was something of a red-headed step-child of a daytimer.  As the Statlers were young and struggling,  the old established station didn't welcome them in and let them use their studio to get the idea of how recording would work.  The daytimer did so for a number of years, after they had hit The Big-Time, the daytimer was blessed with the Statlers wandering through the building unannounced when they had some spare time.  It was a time when radio had some kind of "charisma" that many people who populate these threads wish we could somehow recapture.

GRC -  an alumnus of the daytimer, 1971.  (and it ate my lunch!)

Hiya Goat.  The Statler Bothers spoos was Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys" and it's all on iTunes.  Pretty funny stuff.  Actually is is a takeoff on the local radio station at a place in Kentucky where the Statlers used to play.  It is called Renfrow Valley.  It is kind of a little country music "camp" or "compound" and a lot of the older country acts still play there.  We went to see our pals the Gatlin Brothers there, and stayed at the local KOA Kampground in the motorhome.  Near the park there was the radio tower with the "voice of the Renfrow Valley" sign on it.  We listened for a bit, and it was pretty close to what the Statlers spoofed about.

Back to WSEV..are there just no listeners left?  Have folks lost the ability to "listen"?  I know that FM still has a following in a lot of places, but really many of those have turned into "barker channels" for their station websites..as for the AM signals...is there just no hope?  Hearing Smoky Mountain Radio..one would think that to be the case.

We have a new name for the WSEV Format, Tourist Trap Radio. All corny, all the time.

I don't know where it's originating today, but the programming of sister station KLFJ 1550 used to originate in West Hollywood, CA.  I'd assume Emmons is still there, but I can't be sure.

With his daughter playing on a network TV show, I'd guess so.

With the "used to", I'm wondering if KLFJ is no longer "Branson Radio"?

Wait a minute.

Did you mean "Is he still in Hollywood?" (like I was thinking), or did you mean "Is he still on KLFJ?"

I meant, "Is he still in West Hollywood?"  Last I heard, KLFJ was still Branson Radio.  I'll be in Springfield with family next weekend and will be able to check.  Ironically, Mom enjoys that station and listens mainly for the comedy bits.  However, she usually keeps her radio on KTTS when in Springfield.

Sammy..sammy!  I am planning a trip to Branson next month.  I will be listening to WSEV-AM all the way to Nashville, then north to Missouri, and finally to fabulous Branson where I will tune in KLFJ.  I will record some Smoky Mountain Radio...who, by the way was ringing the "Win Free Stuff" bell..and they were giving away a free breakfast..but not just any breakfast..a CHARACTER breakfast with a duck, and a princess and a PIRATE..Mr. Emmons says "it's just like the character breakfasts they have at Disney..but better..because its FREE". This is radio at its best.

That sounds like a trip given away on some twisted game show.
I can imagine Don Pardo announcing this right now.

This sounds like a prize that you would get if you won on the classic movie "UHF". Good news is, Sammy, 20 minutes of this airchecked is all you need for the whole station's broadcast day.
