Art...For me WSEV 930 is a novelty..a goof. Sort of like listening to that silly Statler Brothers spoof on local Southern radio. (Google "Lester Moran and his Caddillac Cowboys") This station is it. The few of us on this board, because it is SO horrible..are the only half dozen that can stand to spend more than 34 seconds listening to it.
Ooooh! Two of my favorite people in conversation here... Jeff and Art.
Not to hi-jack the thread, but someone help my weary brain. I see the Lester Moran group on the web... but weren't the Statler Brothers spoofs about
Lester "Roadhog" Muldoon? Maybe the Moran group was a later spoof of the Statler's spoof. There was another spoof-character that entered my life about the same year that I came face-to-face with the Statlers: Orbie D Fuddpucker. Was he part of their schitk?
All of this does tie in with hometown radio. There were two radio stations in Staunton, VA circa 1971. One was your traditional Class IV fulltimer, the other was something of a red-headed step-child of a daytimer. As the Statlers were young and struggling, the old established station didn't welcome them in and let them use their studio to get the idea of how recording would work. The daytimer did so for a number of years, after they had hit The Big-Time, the daytimer was blessed with the Statlers wandering through the building unannounced when they had some spare time. It was a time when radio had some kind of "charisma" that many people who populate these threads wish we could somehow recapture.
