Carbonite didn't pull ads from Ed Schultz ("Laura I. a talk slut")
« on: March 05, 2012, 08:04:14 AM »

Double standard?

Carbonite didn't pull its ads from the Ed Schultz show, even though he referred to a conservative host as a "talk slut" http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/conscience-conservative/2012/mar/4/slut-insulting-carbonite-liberal-double-standard/

>>We might argue that Fluke is a young co-ed, and therefor off-limits for this type of media attack, while Ingraham is a media personality. But that isn't quite the whole story

Limbaugh has 10 times as many listeners as Schultz...CEO of Carbonite not exactly a conservative.

Misogynists can also have names like Olbermann, Schultz, Taibbi, Matthews, etc. Where was the similar outrage?

Double standard?

Carbonite didn't pull its ads from the Ed Schultz show, even though he referred to a conservative host as a "talk slut"

There's a huge difference.  Schultz was contrite almost immediately - perhaps his wife/producer was giving him that "look" through the studio window.  Secondly, his was a one-time slip, for which he apologized on the air and personally by phone.  Third, he took himself off his own radio show, where he committed the offense, for a week, and he was also suspended from MSNBC.

Limbaugh, on the other hand, kept it up for three days; only after sponsors started pulling their ads did he issue a  so-called "apology", maybe after being leaned on by a bunch of Clear Channel execs and corporate lawyers.  His apology in effect says "I wish I had found other words to insult Ms. Fluke".   His business is words, and he knew exactly what he was saying.

Yes, there most certainly is a double standard - Limbaugh is still on the air.

As for Laura Ingraham, who was rightly offended by Mr Schultz's language: where is her complaint about Limbaugh and her defense of Ms. Fluke?

And where are the station owners and program directors, who have the editorial freedom to set standards for their airwaves?  If they have mothers, wives, daughters and granddaughters, how can they even look them in the eye?

Ed Schulz called (a very public person) Ingrham, a "talk slut". What does that mean exactly? It was just a gratuitous nonsensical name to call her, with no real sexual implication. He then took it upon himself to apologize THE NEXT DAY on BOTH his radio & TV shows, even though he only said it on his radio show.

Limbaugh, on the other hand, completely mischaracterized and fabricated the material content of a private citizens testimony and went on to insinuate that she's having sex with lots of people. If that's not slander, I don't know what is.

I can't imagine how the term 'slut' could ever be used without sexual implications.

I am familiar only with Olbermann, not the others, and can say that he insults females politically but to my knowledge does not demean them as women.

There is a significant difference between calling a female a "political prostitute" and just a "prostitute".....multiple times.  Not to mention that Rush also misquoted Sandra Fluke as well.

Columnist E. J. Dionne makes  many broadcast appearances as a "contributor" both on radio and T.V.

Tonight he commented that over the weekend he had been at an event with the head of Carbonite and the two of them had some conversation about this whole Fluke-Limbaugh debacle.  The head of Carbonite has a daughter or daughters about the same age as Ms. Fluke.  He thought about how he would feel if someone "dissed" his daughter the way Ms. Fluke was.  He decided his company would not continue to be a team member with an entity  (The Rush machine) that would subject any young woman to such treatment.

Freedom of expression, it turns out, is a TWO-WAY STREET isn't it.

Limbaugh's point-of-no-return was the crack about the online sex video.

Even-in-jest, ADVOCATING porn tattoos him with a Scarlet Letter to religious folk.

"Talent on-loan-from God-uh" has been recalled by The Lender.

Limbaugh went on for 3 or four days and escalated, ED said he was sorry immediately.  Maher is on cable TV not Broadcast radio.  Cable, the Net and Satellite is different from broadcast radio during the day.  Look at Stern, Alex Bennett, etc.  It seems to make a difference for some reason.  Public vs private.  Airwaves are public, the satellites and the Net are private.
