WXGL 107.3 Transmitter

Back in 2004 shortly after 107.3 The Eagle was launched Cox had a CP upgrade to move WXGL 107.3 from its Oldsmar transmitter to the WDUV site in Holiday. With a nice license upgrade to a Class C0. Giving the station a lot more height and a better location. Why did Cox back out of this one.

I was reading a LPFM up in here in Citrus County even moved from the 107.5 to 103.3 frequency to accommodate the move.

You would think that Cox would see the whole idea of moving 107.3 to the WDUV site would mean one less Transmitter site to maintain. Overall lowering costs for Cox.

A C0 is not an upgrade from a C1 (which the Eagle is now), it's a downgrade.

This would have saved them money but likely sacrificed coverage, and the Eagle is doing very well.

According to this link from the FCC a Class C0 is the second most powerful license, Next to a Full Class-C of course, The 3rd most powerful is a C1.

They're at 100,000 watts now. Not knowing what the CP said, I'd assume the higher tower would have been at a lower power.

Nope, thats why they filed to upgrade the class from C1 to C0, so they could remain at 100kW

First the app:  The app called for 100kW ERP combined into the 97.9 & 105.5 antenna at the tower at 410 meters, versus the current licensed facility of 100kW @ 182 meters.

Secondly, a C0 is 100kW up to 450 meters, while a C1 is 100kW up to 300 meters. (A C is 100kW up to 600 meters)

The app had a couple of minor objections filed against it.

A class C0 is, most definately, a class upgrade from a class C1 considering a C1 may operate with a maximum power level of 100kw with a maximum antenna height of 981 feet. A class C0 may operate with a maximum 100kw power level while the antenna height may be raised to approximately 1,500, an additional 500+ feet, without a power reduction.

The signal would go pretty far north. Way farther to the north than most other Tampa stations. Covering all of the far northern communities better than the rest. Which is Pretty much all of Citrus and Hernando Counties. Crystal River, Inverness, Spring Hill and Brooksville. The only two stations that cover those areas really well are WDUV and WXTB.

Believe it or not I actually hear WDUV being played in bushiness's all over Citrus County.

At the same Time Cox would actually get a better signal throughout over parts of the Tampa area. Including a City-Grade signal as far east of the Hillsborough-Polk County Line.

Speaking of the WXTB/WDUV tower site, the skyline above Anclote seems to be missing about 1500' of steel!  Looks like the Channel 10 tower has been dismantled.  When did this happen, and how am I just noticing it!

Were there any radio stations on the second tower?  If so, where did they go.  I know there were some communications and ham radio repeaters there.

No radio on the other tower. Only Channel 10.
