Questions for a newstalk consultant
« on: March 13, 2012, 12:56:13 PM »

Or maybe this thread should be titled: "Questions for Holland Cooke"

Regardless.....

I just tuned into the Limbaugh show and literally no more than 20 seconds in, I hear him talking again about Sandra Fluke.

Is that wise? Should he be keeping this alive...or instead pretend like it never happened?

Also, after listening for about 10 minutes, I thought to myself: "Rush sounds so bitter and so angry and so absolutely full of himself...he's insufferable. Who can possibly listen to this for an extended period of time?"

Who, Holland, who?

I've been wondering this the whole time he's been nationally syndicated.......

My theory about this is he's preaching to his fan base.  His fan base loves it when he does this.

If you're a fan of the Dixie Chicks, you loved it when they said they're not ready to make nice.  Everybody else just rolled their eyes.

But I agree it's not wise, and isn't going to help him with advertisers or the general public.

David Frum, not a media consultant, said Rush can increase his TSL  (time spent listening) to make up for a declining market share. Hardcore fans listening longer to make up for fewer "causal listeners" not listening at all. The new Huckabee show might eat into this past dynamic, according to From.

Bigger markets may have seen an economic and ethnic demographic shift.  Suburbs have gotten "poorer" and ""urban areas" richer to some extent.  Suburbs:  upside down mortgages, expensive commutes, shuttered strip malls, etc.  (e.g. Stockton, CA) Urban areas:  yuppie influx, high end businesses obtaining redevelopment incentives, better real estate market, "walk to work" commutes, high end stores and restaurants. (e.g. San Francisco, CA)    So fewer suburbanites listening longer to make up for high end urban people who don't listen at all.  This map shows that Limbaugh need people in the red areas to listen longer to make up for fewer people listening in the blue areas.

Rush had a helluva run.
2 decades +.

What repertoire can stay en vogue forever?

Holland, as much as I love reading what your present here and beyond, that doesn't answer the OP's question.

Uh...the "OP" is the "Original Poster.
And that would be me.

Just curious if you think Rush should stop bringing Sandra Fluke's name up AND why do YOU think it is that people continue to listen to Rush, in spite of the fact that he has become exponetially more nasty and negative over the years.

He really is a shell of the much more pleasant guy he was when he really took off 20 years ago. He seems to have totally sold out to the lunatic fringe.

Sorry.
I musta been absent the day that was explained.

In Ontario, it's short for "the cops."  And KNOW that -- as you're zipping-up the QEW from Buffalo to Toronto -- the OPP will be clocking you, especially if you have NY plates.

(QEW: "Queen Elizabeth Way")
(OPP:  "Ontario Provincial Police")

RE my-advice-for-Rush: I'm not dispensing, but sure-am listening-with-interest to his nuance, now that Bain has assigned that Crisis Control consultant to advise him.  And as every consultant knows, "all we can do it advise..."

Sorry Holland.  Thought you knew what OP was.

While not a bad move, having a crisis consultant does seem out of character for Rush with his "by your bootstraps, rugged individualism, no one advises me" ethic that he presents.  I believe in years past I've heard him blast celebrities that have gotten into trouble and had crisis control consultants issuing releases about their clients to manage perception.  But I've not heard that since the rehab days when they employed a crisis consultant for that one too.
