IHeartRadio is going to stay commercial free for a few more months on their custom channels. It must be getting rather costly to offer the service completely commercial free.

Spotify has also announced plans to allow free users to continue to use Spotify free without a time limit. They have not said how much longer, but I get the impression it will be at least several months. I am not sure that is a good move. It will cost them a fortune since spotify royalties are significantly more than internet radio royalties and advertising is not covering the costs.

I think Clear Channel's custom station feature may not be working out for them as much as they want everyone to think. They are just now hiring people to try to figure out how to create revenue on the stations. And the commercial free period has not made a dent in Pandora like they hoped it would. They claim Pandora has "consumer backlash" regarding advertisements, yet they have lured very few people in from Pandora. They are very worried about putting in ads that will damage the user experience. Unfortunately for them, their user experience isn't so great to start off with. Clear Channel and their partners do not know how to build great custom channels.

Also the channels I listed don't play all the bands that's why it's not doing well? I can't make a custom channel it will have swearing on it

The lack of censor capabilities is a problem.

Clear Channel's custom stations are powered by "The Echo Nest." Upon further use, I would say they have a lot of work to do. For one, when I ban multiple songs from one artist and don't favorite a single one, I probably don't like that artist. If I build a station on one genre which is not pop, I shouldn't get pop music. If I ban nearly every song since 2000, I probably don't want to hear new music. If I chose an artist with multiple mainstream hits and only favorite hits, I likely don't want to hear some song that were not singles. The Echo Nest fails to take any of this into noticeable consideration. I am actually not sure what it is that it does do. I have never used so many bans on a service in all my tests. Right now Iheart is playing more songs I don't like than songs I do. Maybe they are just slow at learning my tastes?

Well Pandora learns, as does Slacker when you configure the settings. You are in control on those two services. You are supposed to be in control for IHeart too. However IHeart does not appear to learn or at least not very well and they have few options to teach it. So IHeart can be good for a couple hours, but if you want a channel that you can listen to for months, they don't cut it. They don't produce quality station-like material. At least not for me.
