Hmmm...I don't think I've watched the newer version of the show. Do they still use a phone booth?

As long ago as the 60's the phone companies wanted out of the pay phone business because of the costs involved.  Constant attention needed in the form of LD operator assistance, maintenance (emptying coin boxes and cleaning/repairing).  Since there wasn't a suitable substitute the various public utility commissions wouldn't let them out but as soon as they could they unloaded the pay phone biz.

Perhaps you're right about Dr. Who. I've only seen it occasionally. But in the Wikipedia article on Police boxes they describe it as a phone booth with a small office, so I was close.
