Stations still airing network news at 7pm
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:44:08 PM »

I know that in the 80s, a lot of local ABC, NBC, and CBS affiliates in major cities aired a full hour of news at 6pm and the national news at 7pm. Here in Boston, all the stations did that in the 80s, but in 1987, WNEV (now WHDH) moved the CBS Evening News to 6:30, and put Wheel and Jeopardy! on at 7:00. WCVB moved ABC World News to 6:30 in 1994, and in 1995, when WHDH and WBZ switched affiliations, they did not change the times of the national news. I believe WBZ carried the CBS Evening News at 7:00 until 2001 or so. I think there might be a handful of affiliates that still do this (KDKA and WJZ), but I'm not sure. Are there any others?

I believe WCAX in Burlington VT still runs CBS Evening News at 7.

Assume this means 7/6.

KPHO-TV Phoenix airs CBS News at 6.  Not always, or still, as they did run it at 5:30
until a few years ago.

Local news 5-6, CBS at 6, local news 6:30-7.

The other Phoenix, and all the Tucson affils, go with the netcast at 5:30.

I think you will be hard-pressed to find news (either local or national) in the prime-access hour.  (7pm in Pacific, and Eastern).  However, the Central and Mountain zones (6-7p) DO run news during this period, especially local.

Example, Chicago runs local news 6-6:30, but goes syndicated 6:30-7.

I do remember the network news at 7pm in L.A. back in the 70's.  I think they figured out that there was more revenue with syndication at 7pm as opposed to network news.  So most moved the network up, and cleared the 7p hour for syndication.

I think WRGB Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY, still runs
CBS News at 7.  WSB Atlanta still runs ABC News at 7,
and WRC Washington, DC runs NBC News at that time.

At one time all three network newscasts were on at 7
in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Boston, and Atlanta.
