92.3 The Fan
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:19:49 PM »

Is anyone else as underwhelmed by the network as I am? It is some of the driest radio I've heard in a long time. And surprisingly amateurish.

Define "amateurish".

I'll grant you it is drier than WKNR, because that's due to The Fan being more nuts and bolts sportstalk (outside of Kiley and Booms in AMD, who mixes in Hot Talk).  The Really Big Show does a Hot Talk/sportstalk mix during the day, which compared to Baskin and Phelps/"Talking Heads" and their pure sports approach makes it stick out more.

Bull and Fox and Ken Carmen have a bit more pep in their step during PMD and the eveings respectively.

Over 6 months in and I think Ken Carmen is the best guy they have by far....wonder how long he will stay buried on the 7 to 12 shift.

They added a sports host from Erie, PA:

Who knows if he might end up getting a full-time gig.

I listen to it more than WKNR, I like the "quieter" tone, if that makes any sense-they just don't seem to have a breakout host yet, or someone who stands out from anyone else yet, in my opinion-I grew to hate the Really Big Show (the cowbell stuff, and game show buzzer for what seems like years now drove me away, among other things), but it did stand out above anything else on KNR.

For now, it looks like he'll be a weekender.

This station is more sports tabloid than sticking to real sport subjects. I did a little investigating and found out most of these sport talk show hosts went to Syracuse. Adam "the Bull" is a minor league talent nothing special about him. Kevin Kiley and the idiot Chuck Booms should be replace as soon as they find some one. We don't like listening to insults being thrown at people because Booms can't put three words together.

Here is the normal weekday hosts:

Clearly this guy has no idea what he is talking about, not a single full time host on a weekday show went to Syracuse.

Kevin Kiley-Wyoming
Chuck Booms-Kentucky
Andy Baskin-Kent State
Jeff Phelps-Kent State
Adam The Bull-from SUNY Brockport
Dustin Fox-The Ohio State University
Ken Carman-Akron

Could it be that there are thousands and thousands and thousands of people in the Cleveland MSA who still have no clue 923The Fan exists? I know that might sound insane...but, you never know. They are on a so-so northeastern Ohio signal and stuck down on the end of the commerical part of the FM dial.

Wonder why CBS doesn't try to work some kind of barter with WOIO ch. 19 and 19's sister station WUAB ch. 43 to promote 923TheFan?

Kinda ironic: 923TheFan borders on being a bit dull, WKNR sounds like a cartoon character of a sportstalk station. I often listen to 1540 or 990 in Massillon when I'm down there so that I can hear the ESPN network....as IMHO ESPN is kinda inbetween 923TheFan's occassional blandness and KNR's silliness.

The fan has hired in Mark Schwab and Mike Cairns now for the weekends.  Seems they are going the sports anchors make good sports talk hosts route.  Schwab has done this before so he is good.  Cairns not sure yet.  I have never been a huge fan of putting TV Sports anchors on as hosts.  Baskin and Phelps are so boring they make paint drying look entertaining.
