CBS doing about-face with TuneIn?
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:17:34 PM »

Seems they struck an agreement to return more than 40 of their news/talk/sports stations to the app/aggregator. No music stations involved thus far.

Is CBS finally realizing that their Radio.com phone app truly sucks?

I'm sure it will take at least a few days (if not more) and possibly an app update. Checked for a few CBS stations and nada.

What the TuneIn phone app does is direct listeners of a blocked station toward a 'similar' one. Got redirect to some station called "The Game" when I tried WFAN.

a little of that plus the fact that they never promoted the radio.com app anywhere i saw on their cbs radio affiliate webpages or webstreams.  i only found out about the radio.com app from the reviews of tune-in's android app.  it could also be that you could still stream cbs stations on mobiles if you had the right streaming program and if the station provided a streaming link you could use on your desktop.

in any case, glad they reversed course and turned tune in stations back on again.

I was really upset with CBS and Clear Channel because of taking their stations "exclusive", meaning I had to have 3 apps for all the stations I might want to listen to, so this is good news as TuneIn is my preferred app for streaming.

Radio.com really sucked at first but the last update really, really improved things.  So it's kinda odd that they open back up after fixing their own product and making it competitive.

There is an update to the TuneIn app posted today to the Play Store, but it doesn't specifically list the CBS stations coming back as one of the changes. (Plus I have to wait for Amazon to get it since I downloaded it through that store. I just checked and the WXYT stations are available, so an app update isn't necessary.) I figured streaming availability was done server-side anyway (like when the CBS stations stopped being available on TuneIn).

Is CBS finally realizing that their Radio.com phone app truly sucks?

One of the things I've learned with running internet businesses is you don't put all your eggs in one basket.  The fact that CBS used AOL and Yahoo as well as their own Radio.com shows they understand that you need to put your content on every possible platform.  This is partly why so many broadcasters have jumped on IHeartRadio.  It's an existing platform, like a car radio, where people go and then navigate within it.

Except that iHeartRadio IS like putting your eggs in one basket since they require an exclusivity clause meaning that the station's stream can be made available nowhere else but iHeartRadio.

If it's there, it can't be on AOL or Yahoo or anywhere else.

Which is why CBS isn't there.  But all the other companies DON'T have an internal platform like Radio.com, and CBS doesn't appear interested in turning it into IHeartRadio, so they put their content on other open sites.

CBS TRIED to turn it into IHR (notice last year when they pulled all their stations off TuneIn), but they couldn't get it right. The phone app was a complete joke, and while they finally did fix many of the issues with it (after six months!!!), it still isn't all that great. Clear Channel did a great job with IHR, in the creation of the platform, the phone app and the promotion. While it would be nice to be able to access all stations from one platform, IHR is good enough that I'll keep it as a second app. CBS just couldn't get it right, and they lost many users in the process. Quite embarrassing.
