FWIW, I noticed that calls have been flipped on 96.9 & 101.7. 96.9 is now KXGJ-El Campo, 101.7 is KNTE-Bay City. I never thought I'd live to see or imagine the KXGJ calls on the once beloved X-97. Only noteworthy, I guess, to those of us who have that nerd bone.

For what it's worth, KSBJ has begun teasing a "major announcement" on May 4th.

May 4th would fit into the expected timeframe for the closing on the sale of 96.9.

But - maybe - it will be an over the air outlet for NGEN on a different frequency in Houston. 

If 96.9 becomes a simulcast of the main KSBJ programming, perhaps the 99.5 translator will flip to NGEN, since the southwest side would already be covered by the 96.9 signal.  I would think that a change would also be in order for KZBJ 89.5, whose coverage area is pretty much the same as 96.9.

I hadn't even made that association between KXGJ and KSBJ. Go figure...

With the amount of real estate that 96.9 covers, I'd suspect it would be the simulcast partner of KSBJ and all those translators that service Bay City, Victoria, etc. would become properties up for sale. All this NGEN talk seems highly unlikely due to the sheer power limitations of the translators themselves. I mean, even if you take the current KSBJ translators together and simulcast "NGEN" on all of them, you wouldn't even be able to cover half of the Houston metro population with the format.

Most of the KSBJ stations are NOT translators.  There are a couple of C2's, a couple of C3's, and an A.  KZBJ is the only one that would more or less duplicate coverage (of 96.9.)

I rather doubt KSBJ would sell them, anyway.  As non-comms, the stations would probably wind up with a competing religious broadcaster, such as EMF.

No, but if NGEN is placed on KZBJ it's a lot of added territory on the south side of the market.  And Brenham and Bryan/College Station already have translators with the NGEN format.  Throw in the Sugar Land translator and they would just need to find something to cover the north side.

Getting back to the original thread topic: The launch of "Lovin' Life Radio" has been pushed back to Monday, June 4 at 7am, according to the station website.

Thought went through my mind for a moment that this effort might never actually make it on the air.

I am only speculating. Given all the things discussed previously in this thread, this is the only way it can survive. Of course, the brokered programs can only last just so long. Once they cannot achieve results for the service or product they are trying to peddle, then they'll bail until the next one who will replace them in that time period.

I don't believe they are salaried. If they are, again it won't last long because we all know deep pockets have a bottom and eventually, it will come to an end. That's assuming of course, there are deep pocket's in the 1st place. Its history tells it all. KNUZ's hey-day of the 1960s was 50 years ago. That's not coming back.

Question for you long-time Houstonians:

How were the ratings for KQUE 102.9 when it was MOR?  I heard them from FL on e-skip (DX) in the mid 1990s and said to myself, "certainly unique music"---I know that a format like that would not work today in a major city, but I liked it.

Also does anybody there have airchecks of this format?


I may know of some since my husband, Troy Bussell, worked evenings. They're unscoped & on cassette...but I'm sure we may have a few. I think he worked both KNUZ and KQUE.

KUHA is a good candidate for purchasing them to extend south side coverage.
