KFI strong in PPM
« on: April 18, 2012, 04:29:03 AM »

TALKERS.com reports, "KFI, Los Angeles topped sister Top 40 KIIS-FM by a tenth of a point to win the March PPM contest with a 4.9 share."

What's the moral here?  Howzabout this:  News/Talk programmers, STOP BELLYACHING ABOUT THE PPM!

Stations that provide compelling and entertaining spoken-word programming can win, period.

It's that simple. Grin

...KKKFI hasn't aired "compelling and entertaining spoken-word programming" since they canned Tom Leykis for refusing to go the All-Nazis-All-The-Time route in afternoon drive. They still haven't recovered their San Diego audience after that f***-up 20 years ago...

I agree with your comment about Leykis on KFI. THAT was must-listen radio. He was what should've been the prototype for young-oriented FM Talk when it was first delved into over 20 years ago.

He was the best example of how current events can be discussed in a more entertaining and passionate way, without harping on politics all day long. He was everything great about talkradio.

I don't, however, believe that his departure from KFI was all about ideology as much as it was about an ego clash with then-PD David G. Hall. Hall admitted years afterward that he regretted that move.

By the way...can we come up with another word than "compelling" when describing good content? It has "consultant" written all over it.

The issue here is that they don't really care about their San Diego audience and likely wish they did not have KFI as a competitor to their own KOGO.

Southern California, with its multiple, large, contiguous markets is a good example of how stations generally can't make any money off the listening in adjacent but smaller markets. This has to do with the way agencies buy radio, and also with the fact that local accounts in San Diego won't pay LA prices to get a lower tier San Diego audience.

Oh, really? Who, pray tell, tells Robin what to do?

KFI does well because it has a big enough revenue base in the top billing US market to be able to hire top tier talent and run a very good news department.

Bill Handel.

The key to managing high performance talent is often knowing when to leave them alone.

I managed three morning hosts who each managed to be #1 in LA for decent periods of time, and by way of the proverbial ingredients of blood, sweat and tears learned the fundamentals of cat herding, the first rule of which is "never corner an angry cat or it will rip you apart" and the second of which is "cats respond to tasty treats and to having their back scratched, often."
