What rights, if any, do the guys that took the intellectual property rights of Q101 have to stop Merlin from using the Q branding in the Chicago market... or are they involved somehow?

I was wondering the same thing.....

ME TOO. My guess is that they (Merlin) made some money selling off the intellectual property rights of "Q101" as it states, BUT not "Q" by itself. So, they are free to put Q in front of what ever they want.

Well, what was seemingly the final signoff has taken place minutes ago. Right after the paid advertisements, David Sanborn's "Chicago Song" was cued up for what was the last time. Then the TOH (Top Of the Hour) station ID took place. It still ID'd as WLFM-LP. Now, they're simulcasting FM News 101.1 WIQI. I don't know what this will mean for the next TOH ID. The stream is still running. They could start IDing as WKQX-LP at the next TOH ID. I'll be listening online until then as long as the stream is still running.

What kind of signal does 87.7 have in Chicagoland?

Saladressing, I don't know about the signal of WLFM, but I heard the 2AM ET/1AM CT TOH ID minutes ago, the simulcast is permanent. I don't live in the Chicago market. I live in Acworth, GA which is 25 miles north of Atlanta which is why I mention the time in Eastern Time. Now that the simulcast is permanent, I'm going to close out the stream in my browser, and remove the stream along with the old WLFM home page & playlist page from my bookmarks. That is all.

Right now the calls are still WLFM-LP.  However, last Tuesday WLFM, LLC did file a request for the WKQX-LP calls.  It doesn't specify what station they plan to use them on but one sure can't imagine them using them anywhere else!

I might guess it'll stay WLFM until they have the permanent format ready to go.  But that's only a wild guess.

Can't wait for the re-launch of Alt. Rock on the radio! I hope the guys running the Q101 webstream do get involved with the new station, 'cause they are doing a good job with their online programming!

Merlin didn't sell the intellectual property rights to Q101.  Emmis did.

If Merlin want to stay in the all-news business wouldn't they have to cross promote themselves with a local TV Affiliates they signed contracts with. Look at WINS and WCBS they can just get somebody from WCBS 2 to appear on 1010 Wins or WCBS 880 for some stories or any CBS all-News radio with a CBS TV O&O would do what 1010 WINS and WCBS 880 does. Or in the Case of KGO-AM Cumulus in San Francisco they get somebody from Disney ABC O&O KGO-TV to appear on KGO-AM for certain stories. Or in the case of KOMO-FM and KOMO-AM in Seattle they get somebody from KOMO-TV to do a report for them.
