Shadow Leaving K92
« on: April 26, 2012, 03:24:43 PM »

I don't have a lot of details, but Len Shackelford sent an email out to the staff today saying that Shadow and the station are parting ways. Anyone know what's up?

I don't know what's up with that station. It's feeling like a desperate station that has lost it's way. They have gone thru a LOT of change recently. Every time my wife hears them say K923, it annoys her. She feels like a long time friend is gone, and it's not her station anymore. She thinks it's for 20 year olds now, and many of the new people sound like kids to her. She says the station's new name is a constant reminder that it's not her radio station anymore. Shadow's departure will probably reinforce that in her mind.

From streaming them, I actually thought K92.3 sounded much better lately. I know K92, and many Cox country stations used to sound really dated with a really odd adult contemporary type imaging, jingles, & jocks.  I guess I'm just the opposite of your wife, as to me, they always sounded too laid back and mellow. I prefer the slicker, CHR type imaging they've added more recently. Country music has changed and is much younger and more uptempo now and more inline with CHR than AC. I think K92.3's imaging is simply reflecting that trend.  Really, most formats in general have became much more uptempo as new generations enter the 25-54 demo. This is also very evident in AC formats as well.

I'm sure K Country and WPCV aren't minding those leaving the 92.3 frequency for the format they're familiar with.  If K92(3) wants the younger audience, let 'em have it.   Good luck selling that.  And good luck to Shadow on his next opportunity.  He was "the voice" of K92.

I don't understand why nobody challenges this radio station? They've gone thru how many morning shows in the past since Ron Bisson? Once you get used to a show they're gone.

Now they've completely destroyed a heritage radio station with a new name and new logo. Shadow was part of that heritage. Just a sad situation.

By the way, Congrats to Ellis Feaster being the number one show in Orlando. He should feel good he's in a much better place.

With all the clutter and poor performing stations in O-town, I agree, somebody should be going after K92.   PCV is NOT an Orlando station.   Drop a Spanish/Christian/HipHop and go after K92.   Brand it hip, energetic and exciting and you've got a winner........... Grin

Just sayin.

Jamz would be the best candidate to switch.  In CC's case, what would you change? I would bet that JRR probably produces the least revenue of their FM stations but I don't see the market with NO rock station, that leaves Magic and they probably figure it isn't broken enough to bother fixing.

Cox actually understood this more than anyone else did, that's why 94.5 was country back before it flipped to Urban AC. They eventually figured out no one was going to come after K92 to they didn't need another country station to protect it.

Does it make sense to put more country into an area that can  receive other country stations from out-of-markit?
I'm in The Villages and I can get 5 country station.
92.3 WWKA
93.7 WOGK
97.5 WPCV
102.3 WTRS
103.7 WRUF
Can you picture somebody tryin a country station here if there was a station opening?
I dont see it.
I dunno how Hot Talk does in Orlando, but maybe a format hole exist for Classic Rock. And MMO isn't classic rock. good format sure, but classic rock? no.
Here its  WNDD 95.5 out of Silver Springs if you want Clasic Rock.
AOR (maybe  another format missing in Orlando), is covered  on 97.9 from Tampa which comes in well here too.

The key here is that you live in the Villages. Most of the Orlando metro can't get 93.7, 102.3 or 103.7.   93.7 fringes in on the north, the other two not at all. WPCV doesn't cover the entire market either, most of their "Orlando" listeners are down in the attractions area. K92 is the only full-market country signal.
