How did he even get the thought that this would even be ok to whisper to himself, much less say over the airwaves?

Wow. disgusting human. and why hasn't that pathetic CC management fired this idiot yet? He's now an anchor on that station. Boot him off now and let him never crack a mic in Cleveland again. Rover, distance yourself from this moron for once and for all or he will take you down. Grow up and do a better show now that you dodged a bullet. If you did.

This is what happened after the Howard Stern boom years in the mid-late 90's-you still get everyone trying to do "shock jock" radio-why is he not fired? What a sad thing WMMS has turned into.

This is just one of the reasons people leave radio to listen other places. What kind of conversation did people think this was going to morph into? I think it was pretty funny, but I'm a guy...and me and my guy friends are pretty dirty. He should have been dumped on on the air for being a dumbass, then move on. Instead its some big thing(thats actually probably helping them). Most of the complaints are most likely from people who never listened, but saw it in the paper and are again screaming about our "terrible society". Maybe we should all just run Radio Disney. Would that be soothing enough?...maybe we could run it at 20% as to not be too loud.

“This is just one of the reasons people leave radio to listen other places.”

I agree: radio has become a vast wasteland of cookie-cutter, no-thought content, neutered by special interest groups who get offended at everything.  You get bland music with tight playlists, right wing talk or blathering sports junk.  And that's it.  I'm saying shock jockery is what will save radio, but a little personality, a little edge is a good thing.  We're not all soccer moms with eight kids in the car, looking for sanitized content.

Now, I didn't hear the show and don't know the context surrounding the snipped quotes we get to see on the P-D website, so I won't say whether Dieter's comments were inappropriate or not… but it sounds like the morning show crew itself took care of the comment by using it to foster a discussion on the topic.  I guess it's asking too much to have people consider context these days, when playing the outrage game is where's at.

Yeah, rape is real funny-we are all just uptight-I guess it was "taken out of context"-I listened to Howard Stern for years, so not a lot of stuff really shocks me that I hear, but maybe Dieter should use his head before opening his mouth next time.

Can't imagine WMMS would lose a license over this.  If this is what it would take to lose a license, hundreds of stations would be out of business by now.

As far as management being "outraged" goes, they are probably patting him on the back for getting some publicity (any kind will do) in the important spring ratings period, while giving him a public slap on the wrist and issuing statements of outrage.  They know what kind of a show they are staging here, come on!

is this thread ever serious? In no way shape or form would I ever tell anyone else how to think or what to think, but what I would say, is that if you honestly think Dieter was telling people that their daughter should be "raped" to set her "straight," then you may be taking radio a bit more seriously than you should. I don't even like Dieter...I think he's a big reason why Rover's show did not last in national syndication I don't find him to be an entertaining component of the show (in fact, I think he detracts from Rover's talent). With that said, I hear worse on a daily basis in radio..(although to be honest, I listen to Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony..heck, even Chuck Booms routinely tells callers to put a gun in their mouth...does anyone really think he's inciting violence, really?).

Dieter was trying to be funny off the cuff, and I guarantee you that there wasn't anymore instances of "raping" a teenage girl "straight" in the last 48 hours than there would have been otherwise. So let's not be disingenuous here, his comments had no effect on the population in question (or a suspect class, as defined by American jurisprudence) .

Do I think the line was funny? Ehh, not really, but I can guarantee you I've heard funny rape jokes. I've heard funny cancer jokes and I have heard hysterical mental retardation jokes. Doesn't mean I think having cancer is funny. Sometimes it takes the humor to obscure some of the darker things in life.

In the end, we all know WMMS will not lose their license, and in all honestly, this publicity has been the best thing to happen to RMG..a show that hasn't really created much of a buzz in recent years. GLAAD is doing what they do, which to me is honestly more offensive than anything I ever hear on the radio. Everyone is all fine and dandy with special interest groups like GLAAD until they come after YOU or your job. Trying being on the other end of that, especially when your job is talk for a living. We'll see if you're consistent in your thoughts.

Everyone loves to rally around a cause and this is the one of the day. Just please stop with the phony outrage. If you're outraged over this stuff, how emotionally messed up are you over REAL bad things that happen in your life? Ya know, things that matter?
