There's A New Owner In Town(square) For WBSM
« on: April 30, 2012, 08:00:05 AM »

Cumulus and Townsquare are swapping markets. Cumulus is giving a whopping 55 stations to Townsquare in eleven markets, including New Bedford, where WBSM is based.

That would mean WFHN will also be transferred to Townsquare.  WBSM & Fun 107 have always operated as separate entities from Citadel/Providence, so my guess is there won't be a lot of changes to the stations.  The talk lineup may change a little on the AM, since they won't necessarily have to carry the Citadel shows if they don't want to.  The FM does just fine as is, so I'd be shocked if they didn't just leave it essentially alone.  Hopefully longtimers like JR & Michael Rock don't get shown the door.

I definitely have more respect for Townsquare as an operator than Cumulus, this could be alright for Fun107 and WBSM!

This is the first New England market for Townsquare, I'm surprised they didn't pick up more of the Cumulus New England clusters that may be up for sale (Worcester, New London, possibly Springfield for the right price.)

I do not keep up with/visit many markets in which Townsquare has a presence.  Don't they have a lot of stations in Upstate NY?  Either way, if memory serves, they do not run their stations as cheaply as CC or some of the other big fish.  If that is the case, perhaps this can be a good thing for Fun 107.

I have a friend who works for Townsquare in Monmouth/Ocean, NJ.  He seems to like it there.  He didn't get let go when Townsquare took over the cluster from Millenium awhile back.  Hopefully it will be a good sign for the folks on Sconticut...

I'm surprised most that New London wasn't part of it.  New London and New Bedford have always been sisters and even shared engineers going back before Citadel/Cumulus as Spring Communications through the '90s.  Some jocks have also moved between the stations (Fun 107 <-> Q105) such as Kevin Palana.

Maybe now WBSM will bring back Ken Pittman.

New London and New Bedford have been sister markets well before Citadel.  H&D Wireless owned both clusters going back to at least the late 80's, and they were the ones who put Fun 107 on the air.  And yes, they've shared quite a few air personalities over the years.
