Still doesn't offer a clue as to what the song's about...other than to categorize it as a novelty song.  I doubt it, but who knows.

Most songwriters love to let all of us speculate on what they were trying to say in their songs.
I remember reading about what inspired John Lennon to write "I Am The Walrus". According to Lennon he was so fed up with people trying to figure out what the Beatles meant when they wrote their music that he decided to write one that nobody could figure out.
After he finished "Walrus" he said "now let those ******* try to figure out this!"

Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road - Loudon Wainwright III (often shortened to "Dead Skunk") Funny song, crazy title  Grin

The song is musically a simple folk song based on acoustic guitar, but accompanied by drums and strings. The lyrics, which literally interpreted describe a dead skunk in the middle of a busy road and the smell it produces for pedestrians, have often been seen as an attack on then-president Richard Nixon. Wainwright himself has never confirmed or denied this claim, but has said the song was an accident written in fifteen minutes.

Although the single was released in November 1972, it was not until well into 1973 that it caught on with radio stations, and its number sixteen peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart was not reached until May 1973. It was the only record to chart for Wainwright.

Trivia note: Loudon Wainwright III appeared three times on M*A*S*H as Captain Calvin Spaulding, who was usually seen playing his guitar and singing.

Yeah, but if Dead Skunk seemed hard to understand, just think of his followup, The Swimming Song.  Great tune about only one thing.....swimming......go figure

Do any of you know of any announcers who were reluctant to say "The Bitch Is Back" or "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" when playing those?

What about group names?  Was anyone reluctant to say "Faster Pussycat" or "Damn Yankees" when playing songs by them?  I remember one dj back about that time who said something to the effect of, "I'm going to say it again, just because I can, the Damn Yankees."  Grin
