I'm glad that CBS was forced to sell WMMR. 44th birthday this Sunday

As the subject says, I'm glad that CBS was forced to sell WMMR back when they were buying Infinity radio.  If you look at WMMR's former sister stations in other cities, they are gone.  WMMR is still rocking after 40 years.  I'm certain that CBS would have changed WMMR's format to protect WYSP which had better ratings at the time.  Now post Stern, look what has become of all his CBS owned stations in all the different cities.  It's ironic that the original WIP-FM is still rocking as WMMR and the old WYSP is talking as the new WIP-FM.
Thank you GM for keeping this radio station as is and allowing it to continue to rock for almost 44 years!  The 44th anniversary of the first broadcast of The Marconi Experiment by Dave Herman is this Sunday, April 29th.  You guys rock!

 Although I'm a much more Alternative leaning listener than MMR caters to I have to agree with you. I stumbled across MMR in '78 and it's been a permanent setting ever since. YSP never came close to being as good as MMR and after CBS got its claws on it YSP was an audio embarassment. I won't even go into my opinion of Stern and his affect on FM. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WMMR you STILL ROCK Phhhiiiiilllaaaadelphia....and surrounding areas....PS I hope the CBS Radio travesty will someday come to an untimely,and none too soon,screeching halt.

I don't work in the Philly market, but I lived in the general listening area for a number of years. If I ever had the opportunity to work in Philly, WMMR would probably be the first station I'd try to find a position with, even though my tastes sometimes skew a bit more alt than they play.

The reason I still keep MMR as a preset is because, in an age where rock radio stations are sounding more and more homogenized, MMR still sounds fresh and interesting, even when it's playing songs that are 20 or 30 or 40 years old.  Sure there is a playlist that it sticks to for the majority of the day, but its three main DJs, Pierre Robert, Jaxon, and Matt Cord aren't afraid to (and are allowed to even!) stray from the conventional path and play some interesting stuff. Pierre, between the work force blocks, coffee break and vinyl cut, has played some amazing deep cuts, rarities and even the occasionally off-format record; Jaxon's iPod feature lets him play deeper cuts, live tracks as well as singles that haven't been played in years; and Matt's "Pit" show lets him lean a little more alternative than the station leans the reast of the day.

I also like that MMR isn't afraid to adjust it's standard playlist with the times. Some years it skews more alt, some years it skews harder. But in the end it's more well-rounded sounding rock than YSP ever was.  Added bonus: The legions of MMR alum that ended up on sister station WMGK.

Unfortunately, any screeching halt is too late for:  WYSP, WNEW, WBCN, WPBZ, WBUF, WKRK (DET), WKRK (CLE), WXRK (TWICE), and others.  KITS is mixing dance and CHR into their playlist, just like they did with WPBZ before they flipped it to CHR.  KROQ is duking it out with KYSR, who is taking a huge bite out of KROQ's ass!  Someone said KROQ is 7th highest biller so they are safe.  I don't think so.  WRXP was consistently in the top 25 billings, with a 2.6 in the City and cracking the 3s in the suburbs, slowly and steadily trending upwards, with an exclusive format .  That didn't stop some Einstein from blowing it up and replacing it with expensive, redundant programming that garners 1/4 of WRXPs numbers.
