Rush to WYAY?
« on: May 05, 2012, 12:33:57 PM »

OK... on one side you have WYAY, which is said to be all news... BUT KRLD in Dallas says it's all news, too... EXCEPT KRLD has Clark Howard, Michael Smerconish and a guy named Charley Jones, which also seems to be talk... and a bunch of weekend talkers. So, there is a chance WYAY may not be ALL news 24/7.

On the other side you have Rush Limbaugh, the king of talk, who is on a few stations in and around Atlanta - but NOT on FM.

(You see where I'm going with this...)

I don't know how "strong" Rush's contract is with Clear Channel, but I do know that WGST doesn't seem committed to putting an FM talker in Atlanta after they "failed" with 105.7.  Roll Eyes Yeah, right. I also know that if you mention WGST to a young person, most likely you'll get a response of , "W-what?" ("Amanda" could tell you better than me. Grin)

So, how bad does Rush want to be on FM in Atlanta? Would WYAY accept an offer?

WGST is owned by Clear Channel.  And Rush (despite his claims to be on the E.I.B. Network... there is no such thing) is syndicated by Premiere, an arm of Clear Channel.  So it's unlikely Rush is going to leave WGST.

CBS' KRLD Dallas and WBZ Boston are All-News by day. Talk shows air at night.  And WCBS NYC runs the Yankees when they're playing.  Otherwise, all the CBS All-News stations follow the format 24/7.

Why would Cumulus put Rush on their FM when they are trying to launch Huckaby? IF they do anything other than all news between Noon and 3 it will be Huckaby, not Rush.

If Cumulus wanted Huck for WYAY, they wouldn't have given him to WCFO.

Everybody says they hate Cumulus. Well, they did just launch an almost perfect All-News station in the ATL. Now that takes some skill. #GoMcVayAndDickey

Unless there's a kickout clause for putting Huckabee on a Cumulus station.

Guys, when the Cumulus offical was quoted, he was saying Atlanta is the biggest market with no All-News station.  That means WYAY will be All-News all day long.  No Rush, no Huckabee, at least not in the daytime.  Breaking in the daytime for syndicated talk shows means it's not an All-News station.

That's why Huckabee is running on WCFO.  And why Rush will stay with WGST.

That said, this is really going to be an uphill fight for Cumulus.  As I've said in other posts, the All-News format performs terribly in Sunbelt markets.  Till a few months ago, there were no All-News stations in Sunbelt markets except KNX Los Angeles (currently #16) and KRLD Dallas (tied for #20).  And those stations have been around for decades doing the All-News format.

In fact, nearly all spoken word formats do poorly in Sunbelt markets.  Other than KFI Los Angeles, WSB/WSBB Atlanta, KFYI Phoenix, WFLA Tampa and WKAQ and WUNO Puerto Rico, there are no spoken word formatted station in the Top 10 in the largest Sunbelt markets.

I don't think it's something Rush really thinks about much, I'm sure if he did it would go down something like this:

Rush: "Snerdley ... Atlanta I'm still on that low-rated 640 WGST, right?  Yes .. Doubleyou Geeeee Sssssss Teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah! What do you mean you've never heard of it?  Where are you from, Rio Linda?  OK .. OK, you've heard of it, good.  In Atlanta Citadel is flipping 106.7 from oldies to news, see this in my formerly nicotine stained fingers that I printed out from radio-info.com's Atlanta board?  Now, who better than me, 'El Rusbo' to be the marketing promotional centerpiece of their new format!  Send some feelers out to Citadel's higher ups that me ... Rush Limbaugh, with talent on loan from Goddddddd wants to jump to WYAY 106.7 in Atlanta. No Snerdley that's WYAY not WYAI, back in the early days when then owner NewCity had them country they simulcast on both on 106.7 and 104.1 as "Y106/Y104". In fact who owns 104.1 now, Cox? Yes Cox, without Kelly McCoy on their AC B98.5 FM they've got to be really hurting now and desperate to sell.  OK so now more than that tell Citadel they must reacquire 104.1 from Cox and carry me on 106.7 and 104.1 as News/Talk Y06/Y104!  I'm El Rushbo!!!  Oh, Snerdley, one more thing: how will I affect Q100?"

That's excellent, Caller 10, and it's good to see some new material.
