Question for advertisers???
« on: December 02, 2005, 09:01:34 AM »

I'm just wondering as a radio listener if anyone listens to commercials on song-only format stations? I know I don't. The second I hear a commercial I start hitting the pre-sets. This isn't true for talk format though since you aren't usually going seek out other talk. I don't flip to the T-man when Howard goes to break even though I'm facing 20 minutes of advertising... Why?? Because I don't have the patients to jump into the middle of what they are talking about and play catch up. I know each and every advertiser who has spots during Howard, BJ and Leykis for this very reason. My point is... who is paying for advertising on the music only stations??? Obviously there are plenty since we now have "The Wolf" and Entercom didn't see value in the Buzz's format. In my humble opinion, music only format adds are worthless... am I wrong???

PS: BJ is such a hypocrite. He was the biggest supporter of the Buzz's format and the second he gets the morning gig he gets a hard-on for KISW? I know you have to be a company man and put on a good face, but this is the end of a great thing and his excitement was sickening.

The way I see it, the Buzz is dead and it's not likely to come back, therefore, he should be excited just to still have a gig! KISW is all he's got to hang his hat on now so would going on the air and opining away on DAY ONE about the truly sad/disgusting nature of the Buzz's demise really even be worth doing? I am sure he shares a lot of those same feelings but the man has a job to do when the mic is live, and right now, that job is all about trying to cast this whole double shakedown in as positive a light as he can. Not hard to understand. I am sure once things have settled in a bit, and he's on in January, the topic will inevitably come up a million times anyway, and he may have more leeway to speak freely about it then.

As for your advertising question, I am the same way, except, I even turn the channel when commercials come on talk stations! I just don't care. Even if I am hearing a disjointed section of some show I don't even care about for a few minutes, I would rather do that then switch back than sit through commercials. I am an advertiser's worst nightmare!

Talk shows can work in plugs to the live broadcast though, which is getting more popular and shameless every day. As for BJ, I get that he is happy to still have a job. He has worked hard to get this opportunity and deserves to get a shot. The problem I have is that I am steaming about everything that happened and he goes on the Men's Room and says that this is a great idea. I don't think he believes this is a good idea. He is stoked to be the morning guy and is a marketing (BLEEP) so he's doing that to the best of his ability, but I think he knows that the combination effect of talk and rock is destined to fail. The only person that this is good for is BJ. The Men's Room are now destined to fail because the show they did can't work around 12 packs, Tom is on when nobody cares to listen and I'm listening to Don and Mike on the internet. Please tell me why I should be excited BJ??? Either way, I'm a lost soul at this point since I'm investing in Sirius for Christmas. I wasn't sold on it until this happened... so good luck BJ, Adam Carolla has the chops to syndicate into just about any market and this ain't middays buddy!

If Sirius snatched up Opie and Anthony my life would be better, but thank God for options. I might have to get XM too. Either way, f@ck Entercom and f@ck anyone who likes the way things have panned out.

I couldn't care less for O&A. Listening to the church bit that got them fired was the only day I really found myself enjoying their show. Figures the minute they get me to crack a grin they get canned. Otherwise I never really cared about them much - To each their own though...

> I might have to get XM too.

Interesting thought, but I can't see paying for both. I'm looking to follow Stern to Sirius (I've never really been a rabid Stern fan either, although, I have been tuning in a lot more over the past few weeks as his terrestrial end draws near, just out of morbid curiosity I guess, and have to say - not being really strongly swayed toward one provider or the other beforehand - I'd be more likely to go for Sirius just so I can hear what he does when he lands there, then go off to explore the rest of the service's programming.

LOL! Geez man tell us how you REALLY feel! (Although I heartily agree with the sentiment)

I'm just a huge radio fan and I loved the Buzz. Hearing country music on 100.7 when I came back from a meeting was like getting kicked in the nuts. This will be a mistake and people will get fired after the second ratings book... but I won't care by then. That is why I'm so bitter.

Well I wouldn't be so fast to write off this new country station. Country has picked up a lot of steam the past couple years witness KMPS strong numbers, timing is everything and how hard are they really going to have to did to beat KQBZ's #22 status?

Pretty damn hard considering by the time the Wolf is pulling strong (assuming it ever will), the way things are going, KISW will be #22!

#22 in what... 12+. Every market has its low-rent financial or brokered station billing $2mil/yr, and then there's some other guy with a 1.0 or 1.5 share saying "look at our ratings!" that's not billing half that. It's not easy to get a huge share of the entire population when your content appeals to a narrow range of people. And providing that narrow range isn't women 75-death, you can probably sell it at a premium. There's a certain demo- and psychographic associated with a show like Leykis', whereas the listenership for a dope like Hannity varies all over the place. How are you going to target anyone in particular on his show?
