Desperate Housewives Comes to an End.......Maybe?
« on: May 14, 2012, 05:57:40 AM »

While the tributes have been flowing in regarding the last episode of Desperate Housewives, personally I think this show should have ended years ago.

Apparently I am not the only one who thinks so. When the series first started it had over 30 million viewers. The latest ratings recorded a viewing audience 8 million. That's quite a loss of viewers wouldn't you say?

Once the nostalgia-fever ends, I am sure that Desperate Housewives fans will get to see their favorite show over and over again once a cable network purchases the rights to air the show. Either that or ABC will entice the ladies of Wisteria Lane to appear in a movie made for TV to update everyone on what has happened to their lives.

The finale already covered what happens in their lives later on. That part was a little cheesy - three of them end up unrealistically very successful.

The best part was the scene before with Julie giving birth but Karen's passing. As far as endings, I didn't like with the lawyer who represented Bree with her. The writers already did that with Bree with Karl many seasons ago. They put way too many men with Bree over the years.

Andrew, her son, who had somewhat of a important recurring role, was also missing from the finale.

I read that Teri Hatcher doesn't get along well with the other ladies? They all made a lot of money and are set for life but I'm sure we will see Eva Longoria and maybe Felicity Huffman around. Prior to DH, Hatcher wasn't rich years later from her work from Lois & Clark and Radio Shack commercials.

I thought Lifetime already aired DH as reruns? Dramas like DH, Lost and Ugly Betty etc. haven't done well as reruns.

Yep, just means even more people are gonna now think Louisville is the state capital of Kentucky.

I think one of the actresses on DH has finally found herself some  Work to Do as Vanessa L. Williams will play The socialite wife of Gavin Doran on The new ABC show "666  Park Avenue", which will come out next season. Gavin Doran happens to be the show's main antagonist and the owner of New York's luxury high-rise. Terry O'Quinn ("LOST") will play Vanessa's new TV Husband.

I'm going to miss the show, but it was a great finale. I just knew Karen was going to confess when I saw her overhear that conversation.

"Work To Do." Nice use of the song that Williams recorded back in the day. Plus its nice to some of the ex-"Ugly Betty" regulars land jobs, with Michael Urie's "Partners" picked up by CBS and Becki Newton's "The Goodwin Games" landing a midseason spot on Fox.

In the end of the episode, they had some former supporting cast make cameos as dead ghosts. Nicolette Sheridan of course wasn't shown, but they did show Bree's first husband Rex, who narrated one episode some seasons later after his death.

Did Steven Culp  who played Rex choose to leave on his own or written off (i.e. fired, contract not renewed)? He obviously lost earnings not being in future seasons, but made a few appearances. Also, I thought the show (or atleast Bree's role) declined after he left.

I think there was a lot of writing and great acting...  The use of the Johnny Mathis song to fast forward through the events was ingenious...but also sad with Karen's passing...

I will also miss this show.

Prior to DH, Hatcher wasn't rich years later from her work from Lois & Clark and Radio Shack commercials.

While I personally do not believe everything that I see in the headlines of supermarket tabloids, there have been a number of articles written that Hatcher was not in the best financial shape before her role on DH.  Kind of strange when one considers that she did earn  (I would imagine) a decent salary plus residuals from Lois and Clark along with the money she made from Radio Shack and other commercials she appeared in.

One must take into account that perhaps Hatcher's financial situation was negatively impacted by a costly divorce from her ex-husband and custody of their daughter. Lawyers can drain one's account, especially divorce attorneys'.

When it comes to stories about Hatcher not getting along with co-stars on the series, well Hollywood does have more than its share of egos; not that those stories are true.

On a personal note; I stopped watching DH a few years ago because the plot lines IMHO went from being entertaining to more of a soap opera.

I've watched DH the entire series (captive audience along with wifey) and seen it originate as a very good black comedy into a run-if-the-mill soaper then back to comedy.  Along the way it had more than its share of too many characters, improbable (if not impossible) story lines and fragmentation.  It also had moments of sheer hilarity and baseball-like boredom.  Season One was a home run but then the writing quickly fell off and it took a long time to recover but never came close to the original season.

The wrap-up episode though was, IMHO, one of the very best concluding episodes in all of TV history.  Even if you had not watched DH in a very long time you could follow the story.  I remember watching the wrap episodes of other long-running shows (M*A*S*H comes to mind quickly) and they were very disappointing.

I seriously doubt I will watch DH in syndication because, frankly, it wasn't that good over time.  But the first season and the final episode, to me, were among the most enjoyable programs of the genre.
