FM Frequency of the Week - 104.9 MHz
« on: May 16, 2012, 06:53:12 PM »

What do you get on 104.9 FM?

Here in Vermilion, it is WCLV/Lorain, OH with classical music. Formerly it was WZLE with religious programming before the big frequency/format shuffle of July 2001. Although it is a Cleveland station, their tower is about 15 miles to the west, in Avon, OH @ 6 kW and 328 ft. This is also a frequency that I don't recall ever hearing anything else on around here. The station starts breaking up east of Cuyahoga County and south of Akron and west of Sandusky.

Here in Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs), it's usually a very weak WSJO from Atlantic City NJ.

In Bothell/Bellevue, WA, this frequency belongs to KKBW Eatonville, home to "104.9 The Brew" [mostly older hard rock].

In Pacific Beach, WA this frequency IIRC had nothing. Never was able to get KKBW here.

In Yakima, WA this is an interesting frequency. Most of the time, I can get, in and out, KNLX Prineville, OR, 120+ mi S, 860w [!] from HAAT of over 2000 feet. I also got a few times the little K285FN translator in Kennewick, over 60 mi SE, with smooth jazz, it is now CHR [KZIU 101.9].

In Portland, OR I got nothing but KRSK splatter.

Here in Thornville, Ohio, it's all Columbus' religious WCVO on 104.9. They went to IBOC a while back, which wipes out any chance of hearing Toledo's WIOT or Dayton's WTUE even faintly around here. The former would get here only with skip.

In Bellingham, WA, it's CFUN (Sonic 104.9), a CHR out of Vancouver, BC

Further south towards Seattle, it's KKBW.....

Northern VA, it's very weak WZFC, also known as "Fresh Country" (I wonder if the owner got that from an AC station that calls itself "Fresh").

During tropo openings, I have gotten 104.9 from NJ here in VA, when it was an adult standards station, then Spanish, and WFMZ Herford, NC when it signed on with a Contemporary Christian format before switching to classic hits. That was back in the 90s.  I also heard WIGO in Gloucester, VA.

Local K-Love outlet WKDL Brockport NY these days...but that's a newcomer to 104.9, which used to be a wide-open DX channel back in the day. CFJR Brockville ON was the closest thing to a regular for a few years befoe that.
