NYC has an AM Stereo station again -- 1660 WWRU
« on: May 17, 2012, 08:38:04 PM »

Lately I've been getting a C-Quam AM Stereo pilot tone from 1660 WWRU, although since their programming is all Korean talk, there is little, if any, chance for them to actually broadcast anything in stereo. I believe they are the first NYC-market station to transmit a C-Quam signal since around 2003 or so, when 660 WFAN turned theirs off.

Leonard Kahn still has a holdout, too: 1600 WWRL is transmitting Kahn Power-Side on the upper sideband, with the 15 Hz Kahn/Hazeltine AM Stereo pilot tone.

WWRU is not strictly talk. I have heard a fair amount of music when tuning around and landing on this station. Much of it is familiar pop tunes in English.
BTW, I recently noticed that WWRU is simulcast on WNYZ 87.75 from 8 pm to 6 AM. During the rest of the day, the FM station still broadcasts  in Russian.

I love it when you talk dirty. Smiley

I am a fan of the Kahn system. It works and it works well. It has more range than C-quAM and great for dx-ing.

It was, and still is, the "natural" AM Stereo system.

I had it in my car and home. I was able to record air checks from both.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if every station which had Kahn, turned them on. Powerside counts because they each had a switch for upper, lower, and stereo.
