I will be visiting the Boston area around the 4th of July this year and if someone could give me information about the stations in the area it would be appreciated. Our main area we will be staying in is Mattapoisett, I enjoy listening to oldies/classic hits are their any stations programming that up there? Also are there any small town stations still doing "live" and local radio so I can dial hop while I'm sitting on the beach and sample what they are doing.

In Mattapoisett you're getting closer to Cape Cod. Cool 102 (at 101.9) is a good classic hits station. You can also pick up B101 (101.5) in Providence but only morning drive is local. There's also WROR at 105.7 and WODS at 103.3 in Boston but I'd still go with Cool 102.

Mattapoisett's an interesting place to be listening from - you're close enough to both Boston and Providence to hear those signals, along with the surprisingly crowded Cape Cod market. There's some interestingly local radio on the Cape (and Islands) - WMVY 92.7 is a very local AAA on Martha's Vineyard, and you may be able to hear the new WAZK 97.7 from Nantucket that's due to sign on this week with local AC. You'll be in local listening range of one of the few all-Portuguese FM stations in the country, the venerable WJFD 97.3 from New Bedford. WSAR 1480 is a good full-service local AM station from Fall River, and you'll be close enough to the coast to hear New York City's bigger AMs, too.
At nearly 50 miles out, the Boston stations will be listenable but will require a little effort.

Serving the greater New Bedford area is WBSM-1420 (news/talk). WBSM has local and live programming in the early morning (6-9) and afternoons.
(The beautiful seaside town of Mattapoisett is only a few miles from the city line and a suburb of New Bedford)
New Bedford also has 6 F.M. stations and 1 other A.M. station (sports talk).

It's a weak signal in Mattapoisett at best - about 30 miles away, and will be fighting with co-channel WCRI-FM from Block Island RI. But, yes, a great local station that's well worth a listen if the propagation gods are smiling on it. |

There's also a locally produced brokered-time program on Sunday mornings, 10 am to 1 pm, over on suburban AM station WARL-1320. The program, called "Guido & the Doo-Woppers" features music from the very early years of Rock & Roll, as well as harmonies and Doo-Wop.
For stations still doing "live and local" radio....both 630-WPRO in Provdence and 1480-WSAR in Fall River do very lively local news-talk formats, and probably come closest to giving you a real flavor of what the area is like.
If you're into sports....then you HAVE to check out Boston's WBZ-FM 98.5 ("The Sports Hub").

yo might try canadian FMs on tropo. or HF to africa & middle east - pretty good location with a bunch of saltwater for about 180 degrees of compass
