Gen X 100.3 about to start Brewing?

GenX on 100.3 was DOA.  GenX format isn't really pulling ratings anywhere.  In STL's GenX case... the staton was the lowest FM radio station in history, so even if they would have a "fan following", it was really limited.

KHITS is not a "heritage station"... at least not yet.  The station flipped to KIHT Khits 96 in the 90's.  KSHE on the otherhand is heritage and heritage classic rocker.  The stations are both PPMing well, but just recently.  KSHE and KIHT have both struggled some over the past few years and they have both seen their in/out with personalities and shows.  As for Emmis combining the two - it would most likely push KSHE right back to a top 5 in the city instead of splitting the listenership.

Emmis and CHR.  Emmis like rock.  Emmis doesn't do CHR.  They do News/Talk, Hip Hop/R&B, Sports and have one soft AC in Indy.  I call them "Real Man Radio".  If they were to flip anything I would be willingt to bet on Mike accessment of 97.1 to 96.3 and 97.1 doing Classical.  Or them completely dropping News/Talk 97.1 all together.  They have quite a few options here.  However, I will bet they don't do much quickly.  Emmis let's their stations, historically, rot before they change.

John Beck would have to eat a whole lot of crow to flip a station to CHR - when Emmis bought WKBQ from Zimmer back in the nineties, and they switched it to Modern AC - he made the bold statement that the CHR format would never work in St. Louis...

I remember that!  Granted the format was down in the mid 90s, but CHR is one of the more durable formats to stand the test of time.  If you play what is popular, people will listen.  Period.  Ironic they flipped WKBQ to a fad format that was already dying on the vine nationwide by the mid 2000s.  Did Alice@104.1 even make it to the end of the 90s?  I hope modern AC can make a comeback someday, but nowadays the modern AC format barely exists, as I would call only a few stations in the country that are more modern AC than Hot AC.  How many formats have 104.1 been since Z-107.7 signed on?  Five?

Alice only lasted about a year.  It signed on in '97, I think March or April, and went away by mid-98.  I was in St. Louis for a week in the summer of '98, I think June, and I'm pretty sure Alice had already become WXTM by then.

Z-107.7 signed on in '97.  So, here's what I remember in the history of 104.1 since then:

Z-107.7 signed on in '97.  So, here's what I remember in the history of 104.1 since then:

Don't forget that The Mall was all 80s but sometime later on they went to "Flashbacks of the 80s and 90s" before switching to All Christmas music at the end of 04 AND following Christmas they were 104.1 The "Wheel" of music, which was the beginning of variety hits movement (where the arch got their idea) and they ran all kinds of music....oldies, country, rap, pop, classics...it was an interesting concept

They should have just done the variety hits...they would have blown the doors out on that bad signal. Instead they sold it after Red to Radio One and they did what should have been done and upgraded that signal.


P.S. Special note I have a sweatshirt that says "Q-104 The Planet's Hottest Music" and on the back says "Steve and DC Dam Sweatshirt"

104.1 did have a lot of formats before Emmis sold the station... Since Radio One bought it, and moved the transmitter into the heart of the city - the station has become by a fairly wide margin the #1 Urban in town.  I think, though, if Emmis would not have pulled the plug on WKBQ back in the late 90s, it might still be on the air today.

Seems like this was a good move for CC so far, the raitings are actually starting to tick up on that frequency for once.

Hey folks, I've always thought that someone from the outside looking in can shed some better light on a situation.  KHITS and KSHE are not really all that related.  I mean, yes, I guess they are slightly but KSHE and The Brew are closer related than any of those are to KHITS.  KHITS is much more "pop" leaning where KSHE and The Brew is classic rock.

Now, The Brew will die within a year or two.  It cannot compete with KSHE.  Why?  KSHE's playlist that digs deep and goes wide.  Clear Channel classic rock stations don't dig deep at all.  You will notice many repeats in a days time on The Brew.  Again, perhaps one of you will disagree with me but I'm telling you, nearly all CC classic rock stations sound the same.  KSHE is much more local sounding, and the classic rock is more in depth vs The Brew.
