Congratulations, Sky Daniels!
« on: June 01, 2012, 02:08:58 AM »

Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

HUGE congrats to Sky Daniels, now interim GM at KCSN...PLUS the announcement of Harcourt's new content, PLUS a signal upgrade in the next month or so.

This station knows no bounds under Sky's watch, and I'm excited...

Yes, congratulations Sky.  But the LA Times Article creates almost as many questions as it answers. It reads like lazy "Press Release Journalism" whereby the writer simply takes the station's press release and rewords it for publication without any further investigation. To wit:

  • What was the reason for Kearns' exit and Sky's added responsibilities? How long is Sky going to be the "interim" GM and what are the station's plans to find a new one? Or are there no plans in place and Sky's "interim" tag will be removed after a period of time? Is the combining of the two positions a budget cutting move? Can he really be GM, PD, and maintain an airshift for any sustained period of time? That is a lot of work, even at a small public radio station.

  • If the Harcourt show has the same name plus the name of  new sponsor, and will run in the same timeslot, is it essentially the same show as the current one that will be syndicated or is there going to be something different about it? How will the syndication aspect change the show?

  • How will the signal upgrade be accomplished? Strategically placed low-power transmitters? Will the signal upgrade interfere with Orange County's KSBR, which shares the same frequency but seems to have the much stronger signal? Did KSBR have any say in this new upgrade and if so, what is their position on it? KSBR is only intended to be an Orange County signal, but it can be heard quite clearly in nearly all inland points south of downtown LA. Any KCSN upgrade in the LA basin will necessarily come at the expense of KSBR. Also, how is the station paying for the upgrade?

I mentioned when Sky took over the station and put in his weekend lineup that long-standing relationships with the Times of some of the personnel, such as Robert Hilburn, ensured that the station would get a lot of uncritical coverage from the Times going forward. It was an easy prediction to make, but it has nonetheless come true, on this and several other occasions.

As always, transparency is our motto. The Times had a lot of info to cover in the article, as much is happening (more to come soon). BTW, the moves have also been reported in other local and national publications, so it is not just The Times recognizing KCSN's purpose and potential.

Karen wanted to return to teaching--her first love, much like radio is mine. She is going to focus on radio and media management studies, and is going to actively identify qualified CSUN students with skill sets we can utilize at KCSN.

The GM/PD role is an enormous amount of work, and I appreciate the University's show of support in allowing me to further guide KCSN on several levels. I will be creating new infrastructure to help us continue upward momentum.

The Connections Made By Guitar Center show is a tremendous collaboration with GC, Filter Magazine, KCSN, and other non-comm stations across the country. The intent is to provide exposure for unsigned and breaking acts. Guitar Center has five million unique visitors a month to their website-- which will help generate initial interest in the show as the radio consortium builds out. This is truly "connecting" several media platforms in a coordinated effort, which has long been lacking in the music business.  The success of their "Guitar Center Sessions" with DirecTV made Nic an obvious host.

All of our signal upgrades operate within our ascribed dbu contours, so we are sensitive to KSBR and other stations in all of our growth initiatives. This is one of the greatest challenges we face--we have growing demand for our programming, and fulfilling the public interest is important to us.

As for paying for the growth initiatives, KCSN continues to develop increased patronage and underwriting. We intend to be a source of pride and revenue for the University, always sensitive to the ever increasing funding cuts to education and arts in the State. It is through the generosity of artists like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers that we can take our first steps to prominence.
We hope to be recognized by more corporations, foundations, artists and patrons for our dedication to artist development.

We know we need to earn that recognition.

KCSN will be available under the Public Radio section on iHeart.

From Radio Online with quotes from Sky Daniels of KCSN and Brian Lakamp of Clear Channel:

I checked out KCSN via iHeart. Wow, what a great sounding station. Good selection of tunes. It's too bad the signal is trapped in the Valley because I'd love to tool around in my car in LBC listening as well.  Great job Sky. Me likes what me hears.

Mimi,

Good to see you back!

Did the suits take the posting reigns off of you or are you just going rogue? (I won't tell!).

Hey Sky,

How is that signal upgrade coming along?

The Times article said it was to be operational on July 1, but I still hear static in downtown, Burbank, Studio City, and Glendale.
