« on: June 05, 2012, 11:36:01 AM »

In other news, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced, "I'm going to Disneyland!"

Let's see.....we already have "green-washing" as a term to describe the actions of companies which justify even the most trival of their arbitrary actions by hiding them behind a veil of "environmental friendliness" or other such rot, because it's the "in" thing.

So, what'll we call stuff like this? Anyone in favour of "fat-washing" say "aye".

And this post didn't come out worded nearly the way I'd wanted, but I'm on lunch period and don't have a lot of time.....

I bet some parents would rather they curb the music videos on their main Disney cable channel instead. Tongue

This is great, but the Disney rules don't go into effect until 2015. And this initiative started in 2006?
It really takes a grandstanding statement and a couple of more years for them to "do the right thing?" That's admirable!

ABC/Disney expects advertisers who get squeezed out to create new products to advertise on the cartoon blocks on Disney-owned stations on Saturday mornings, Disney XD, and Disney Radio too? That's chutzpah there. They might have a lot of (expressed) confidence in Disney Radio, Saturday morning cartoon blocks, and Disney XD to make a difference in corporate product development decisions, but I doubt that.
Besides that, Disney Channel, the main 24/7 media for reaching kids, has sponsorships, not commercials.

And now Disney can deny advertisers because they "create obesity." Like the Disney properties are just out there making the world a better place, and they haven't been denying advertisers for whatever reasons for years. Way to take a stand, Disney.

I hear the reason for the 2 1/2-year wait is due to preexisting advertising deals that Disney is apparently waiting out before these nutrition guidelines conveniently go into effect. If they really wanted to take a stand, they'd pull the trigger on July 1. That's like NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposing a ban on large soft drinks - on the eve of National Donut Day! Shocked

By the time Disney makes their stand here, some of the kids watching the junk food commercials will have kids of their own!   Shocked Shocked

Removing junk food ads will only change the "name brand" habbit of junk food. The kids will now accept store brand Junk a little more.
What needs to be done goes way beyond television. Right into the vending machine.
I'm not sure how it is in the States, but here in Canada, (Province of Ontario) they are banning all vending machines in schools that do not vend "healthy" foods and beverages. (simple English = bye bye Coke and Pepsi.)
