RKO, 1510 changes?

Anybody remember when WRKO was one of the top three stations in town?  The talk leaned right, but it wasn't what they've got now, which is 13 hours of liberal-bashing for its own sake. That draws a bigger audience than "progressive talk" but the numbers are still pretty bad.

When they were good, to paraphrase Tom Paxton, they had discussion that inspired discussion, not dittos.  They paired a liberal, Cuthbert or O'Brien, with a conservative, Jeghelian. They had Burns and Williams who were provocative and unpredictible, They had Brudnoy.

I'm not sure where talk radio became stratified into conservative or liberal, but stations make that choice at their peril.

They need good radio, not knee-jerk pandering to a segmented audience.

And by definition, anything with McPhee is not good radio

So are you suggesting that Entercom is going to continue to simulcast AAF on 97.7 except from 3p-7p when they will broadcast Carr?

Yeah; that's what I was suggesting... yesterday. I did get the post up before the official announcement, which, as everyone now knows, had nothing to do with 97.7. Even though I was 100% wrong, I think my idea had some validity. The 107.3/97.7 AM-drive show (which I've never heard) has been labeled as talk programming by some posters. So having one of the simulcast stations go talk in PM drive as well as in AM drive would not exactly be breaking format. The mixed format might have worked (and might still work). It certainly would have been good for Carr's widely publicized desire to preach to a younger choir.

I have a hard time believing 1200 will stick with conservatalk for very long.  They've pretty much blown off what little audience they built by jettisoning the few reasons they tuned in, Rush, Katz & Severin.  The birdfed talk will just be a placeholder until they decide what's next.  They even let WRKO have Noory.  What will they run overnight, or after Levin?  More importantly, what's the point?

It is an interesting suggestion and I have no idea what the split is between those who listen to the AAF format on 107.3 vs 97.7 but I would not risk blowing off the AAF audience for four hours every day. I doubt it and I could be wrong but I don't think someone into TOOL is going to be interested in listening to Grand Pa Carr talk about the best fried clams in Maine. Some may stick around most would switch to the other frequency but if they could not get it they would be pissed and I would not run the risk of alienating a loyal base with a high TSL.

It does seem like 1200 may be just airing those shows till CC can find someone to take them (Hannity,
Levin, Beck etc.) What does 1200 run overnight--Red Eye or Bohannon? If they intend to stay talk they can sign contracts etc. but maybe they don't stay talk. They do keep C2C for now but what airs after it shifts to RKO...same with Rush. (Other than reruns of certain shows)

Hmm though it does seem weird...almost like what it was like at the old MEX where the top 40 music suddenly stopped and in came talk, appealing prob to an older audience: namely Jerry Williams.

More to the point would they want talk about Menino, Obama vs Mitt, hacks, etc. Yes the appeal to a younger generation (hence a move to FM) might work but the AAF audience vs the RKO one?
