Can anyone tell me why WEEI station identification spots mention "Lawrence/Boston"? What is the Lawrence connection?

The city of license for the station, (frequency), is Lawrence not Boston even though the studios are in Boston. The legal ID being...legal has to have call letters and city of license together, hence, WEEI Lawrence

hence, WEEI-FM Lawrence
Fixed. WEEI is licensed to Boston, WEEI-FM is licensed to Lawrence.

When you hear the top of hour ID, like the usual Jim Cutler one it's "This is sportsradio WEEI Boston. WEEI-FM and HD-1 Lawrence Boston" Meaning the 850, and then the 93.7. Recently some Red Sox games got bumped to WRKO due to C's playoffs and there would be liners (not IDs, liners) saying "Red Sox baseball, 93.7 WEEI-FM" or "WEEI". Even though it was on WRKO. As long as they do the top of hour ID saying "WRKO Boston" they're fine. Sure, it mentions WEEI in the liner but it's really WRKO..but the ID must follow the rules. A Sox affiliate can have Joe C mention "...coming up on the WEEI Red Sox radio network" even if you're listening on a far-flung station.
The 106.9 in the Phila. area may do liners as "IQ 106.9 Philadelphia" or "WWIQ Philadelphia" as it's serving the Phila. market BUT at the top of the hour they would properly ID it as "WWIQ Camden-Philadelphia" as they're really licensed to Camden NJ. Back when 93.7 was WMKK near the top of the hour you'd hear the "Mike FM guy" say, "Mike FM...Boston." Not a legal ID. But then: "WMKK Lawrence-Boston" nr top of hour. THAT was a legal ID. You can say another city in the area, or the bigger city you're serving, after the PROPER ID. Thus WEEI-FM Lawrence Boston

I think it was after i was in school at the time and the station was very hard to come by and this was in Peabody now granted it was a metal building, But as soon as the stick in Peabody went up the station was much clearer maybe 98-99 might be wrong!!

http://bostonradio.org/stations/1919Still says WMKK on that page. >>>(American Radio Sys.) quickly began working to move 93.7 closer to the center of the Boston market. In the summer of 1995, WEGQ began building a new 152-meter (498-foot) guyed tower at 100 Lakeland Park Drive in Peabody, easily visible from US 1 and the I-95/MA 128 interchange. “Eagle” signed on from the new tower in early 1996, with 34 kW at 179 m (587 ft) and a much-improved signal into downtown Boston and the South Shore.

WCCM-FM went to 50,000 watts in 1973 from a site in Andover, right adjacent to 495. They switched to Stereo in April, 1974 and became WCGY with TM's automated "Stereo Rock" format. Curt Gowdy owned 93.7 until the early 90's. Eventually, 93.7 moved to the current Peabody site several years ago.

I totally forgot about "Eagle 93.7". I knew someone who listened to that station constantly
