Another Tech Question..
« on: June 12, 2012, 02:30:42 PM »

In the olden golden days..we would fire up a Marti, out of a remote bus, and play records live on remote....soooo  in the hi tech world of today...is that possible over the internet ?  I can see throwing down a laptop, and doing it via Livestream,Stickcam etc..assuming there is Wi-Fi at the location and it has enough upload megs...but that can be done without a radio station involved...anyway to replicate the old "remote" with today's technology....I'm asking for a friend.. There are "IP Based" codecs that could send audio over a internet connection.

For instance, Telos' http://telos-systems.com/zip-one/ would work if you had a good stable internet connection...

Other vendors also have products to do the same.. if delay isn't an issue you could use something like a Barix box which does a "shoutcast/icecast" type stream.

radio remote broadcasts have kind of died with the computer...some stations now fake it and record the remote breaks in the studio and then just send the van and personality out...a few sport shows do theirs out on occasion but for the most part radio is in the box...empty studios for most of the week

If my TV station can do live "on the spot" news reports over the internet during live news programming, it should be possible for radio.  We've done "in car camera" shots from traffic situations on the interstate, for example.  You can run a "stream generating" program the station can log into, for instance.  Nicecast for Macs works well for this.  AOL Instant Messenger and similar programs offer almost instant audio transmission.

I do a four hour live show Friday's from 6-10pm on Stickcam..audio and video..so I familiar with the concept..but not every location you might need to "remote" from would have an internet connection...streaming audio doesn't take much..audio and video do require a pretty decent upload speed..two really good laptops and a good connection with one of the streaming providers and your in business audio wise..I imagine you could stream back to the station..and they in turn feed the signal out OTA..and at the same time stream it via their website..I'm it's done  just trying to wrap my old mind around the nuts and bolts of how to do it...

It sounds like you want to hook up your remote mixer to the internet instead of a Marti to send your "live remote" back to the station.  It definitely can be done.  What exactly are you trying to work out?

We have used a laptop with a USB mixer, Sprint 3G data connection and Skype for high school football PBP. It works quite well for us.
