YOu gain substantially by dumping the stereo - if you dump the pilot.  It represents 8 - 10% of the total modulation.  The HD can - in some instances - cause self interference with the analog. 
We used to turn the pilot off manually in the 70s when broadcasting footsball games.  And many FMs had two mics on the arm because one interpretation of the Rules whould have you turn the pilot off if the mono content exceeded 2 minutes contiguously.  They couldn't bring themselves to say 'in a row' after all, they were bureaucrats.  We ran an early Shaffer automatuion and interestingly enough music was stereo (from tapes) and the spots were mono - because Moulic himself couldn't really get a carousel cart player to stay in alignment.
