MarcB:
My mom and I bought similar Sony clock radios several months ago. She bought hers at Target, I bought mine at Walmart. I use mine to wake up. She uses hers for a radio in the kitchen. We're both having the same problem with it. These radios set the clock automatically when you plug them in, however we both noticed that the clock is actually around two minutes fast compared to other clocks that set themselves such as the ones on our cell phones and the ones on our cable boxes. Does anyone else have one of those radios where the clock sets automatically and is anyone else having the same problem with the clock being fast?
unclehonkey:
yup. Just checked against the cell phone and its almost 2 minutes fast
(the cell changes then about 10-15 seconds later the clock changes time)

I'm having trouble figuring out how these clock radios set themselves automatically. Do they sync to GPS/Glonass or WWVB, or something?

Supposedly they do synch with WWV/WWVH/WWVB.
And given Sony's less than stellar product quality lately and all the RF interference in the modern world of the typical American household, I'm surprised it would even work at all.
I think the only way to REALLY know is synch it with the WWV stations and see what happens.
But then, how would we know if THEY'RE off by a few minutes? You could make an MIT physicist's head explode with the range of possibilities.
And if WWV is off by x amount of minutes (and this..is...an....ATOMIC.....clock......folks.......) Well, I'm off to Bhutan! Ciao! See ya! Auf Wiedershen! Send me pics of the mushroom cloud over Fort Collins!
But seriously, I think it could be bad chip programming inside these clock radios or a possible delay caused by atmospheric conditions/RF interference.

I guess it's better to wake up two minutes early than not at all? ???
When I was a kid we used to run on Mom Standard Time. She had all the clocks
in the house set 20 min. fast so we'd never be late going anyplace.
