Oldies on AM 700?
« on: June 16, 2012, 07:50:45 PM »

Not complaining - it was wonderful to hear oldies on the radio in Houston.  I was only able to listen for a few minutes, but was there a format change.

That would, in fact, be the Paul Berlin Show. I believe it airs each saturday evening from 6 to 8.

Andy - you are correct - it was indeed the Paul Berlin Show. As his former show producer (before I left voluntarily to take my current gig in Huntsville) Paul airs every Saturday evening from 6-8pm. A few years ago, Dan Patrick approached Paul about doing a weekly show on KSEV, and he's been doing it since. Even after all these years, Paul still has a great set of pipes, and he certainly brings a bit of nostalgia to his offerings.

Isn't Houston the largest market without a full time oldies/classic hits station? What was the last station in Houston to carry that format? Washington and now Atlanta with the demise of WYAY are without an outlet as well.

With the success of CBS-FM, KRTH, WOGL and WLS-FM I wonder why an oldies format isn't tried in Houston these days.

They call themselves classic hits.  Compared to other stations in other markets that are classic hits, you wouldn't think it was the same format.  I sure wish somebody would just call oldies stations oldies stations instead of trying to lump classic rock and oldies together.  Houston has neither as far as I am concerned.

The CBS-FM, KRTH, WOGL classic hits stations are pop leaning and have a classic Top 40 delivery. Stations like 107 5 in Houston also use the classic hits moniker, but are classic rock based in terms of playlist and the sound of the station. When searching for certain stations the "classic hits" format description can go either way. Oldies would be more of a proper term for stations like CBS,KRTH and WOGL,but that "o" word is not used very much anymore and there lies the confusion of stations calling themselves "classic hits".

Would be nice to hear the "o" stuff in Houston again.
